Are Noni & Vitamin c good for platelet? How much of each?

I have not really seen anyone on here that has had much success (if any) with Noni, other than those who seem to be selling it.

Vitamin C can be beneficial to maintain the integrity of the blood vessels but is not known to necessarily do anything to prevent the auto-immune destruction of the platelets, nor do high doses have much to do with production of platelets.
But, if you tend to bruise or bleed easily or wounds heal slowly or blood vessels burst, you would likely benefit from some extra Vitamin C.

If you tend to bleed for a long time, even from a small cut or have difficulty in clotting, you may want to increase your diet to include foods high in Vitamn K. When I had my first baby, I lost a significant amount of blood, and I was very worried about the same thing happening with my second pregnancy. So, my midwife had me drink Nettle Leaf tea, throughout my pregnancy, as it's very high in Vitamin K and iron. The weather was hot, so I drank it iced. My 2-year-old loved it as well. I had virtually no bleeding after that delivery, whereas my first, I bled for nearly 8 weeks.

Here is some information from a poster who is no longer active on this forum, though you can still do a search on her posts. She knew a lot about nutrition and supplements and had experience using them for her son, who was at zero platelets for 3 months. Vitamin C was an integral part of keeping him from bleeding, until she found homeopathy, which brought his counts up to normal. Her name is Patti. I did a search on here for some of her previous posts on Vitamin C and here she shares some of her experience using it (One caution I would add is that high amounts of Vitamin C can cause kidney stones to form):

Prednisone will SUCK the vitamin C out of your body faster then you can say boo (that was our experience). However, Vit. C will give you strong cell integrity to help prevent bleeding. It is not recommended to take high doses of C though without having a G6PD test run first. If one has this gene deficiency, large doses (I mean like 5K +) can damage the body. The gene deficiency is mostly seen in those of asian descent. However, we did this test anyway as a precaution (we were using HIGH doses of C).

As a side note - when Luke's count were zero for so long (3 months), we were using HIGH doses of powdered vit. C to keep his cell integrity strong. It doesn't prevent bleeding, but it did make the cells less likely to burst. So long as he was on it we managed to keep him from any bleeding episodes (minus the prednisone incident). If we dropped the vit. C at all he would start to get bloody noses and petechiae. We did find that using capsules did NOT work as it took too long for them to open in the gut and simply caused the runs. But powder put into applesauce goes straight into the blood stream and works well for cell integrity. When Luke started bleeding we started researching and found that prednisone actually leaches vit. C from the body. Which is something else to consider in all this.

The trick with Vit. C is to NOT use capsules but use powder put into applesauce or some other tolerable substance. Bowel tolerance is MUCH higher with powder because it absorbs immediately whereas the capsules have to dissolve first. That might seem trivial but if he has ITP, he has gut damage (that's a given), which means dissolving that capsule will take longer which means the vit. C is further into the intestinal system before it actually can hits his blood stream. This causes way more bowel disturbance. We did 2500mg. of powdered vit. C 6 times a day in 3 tbls or so of applesauce and that worked well for our boy. Your son's tolerance level will be different, but the goal is to get cell integrity at whatever dose he can handle. I would recommend using powder (or opening the capsules) as he'll be able to handle more and have better cell integrity. Also, spreading throughout the day is crucial. Minimum 5-6 times is what we aimed for.

Hello April. I have had positive success with taking Noni (Morinda Supreme) under the supervision and recommendation of my physician. I also take it with an immune system modulator vitamin supplement, Been taking it for 3 years while searching for the cause of my now chronic ITP. Has kept my platelet counts fairly stable at 33-57 instead of 18 for 3-1/2 years now. I also take Vit C on a regular basis, among others. Folate, the "natural" form of folic acid with B-12 is also part of my regular regimen. Recently had a stomah flu....made my platelets very low. The folate and B-12 brought them right back up within a few days.

Hope this is helpful.
