Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia (previously called Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura) (ITP) is a rare, chronic and debilitating autoimmune disorder associated with increased bleeding risk and impaired quality of life. The primary cause of long-term morbidity and mortality in patients with ITP is hemorrhage (1). The prevalence of ITP in the United States is estimated to be 34,200.

I thought this was quite interesting. We have an new name for our disorder? And only 34,200 of us are out there? hmmmmmmm.

edit: 34,200, in the US.

Very interesting! I don't know about you, but I don't feel "debilitated". Impaired quality of life maybe, but not debilitated!

Yeah, there seems to be a bit of misinformation there. Those statements are misleading to say the least.

An FDA Orphan Drug designation provides tax benefits and an exemption from user fees, eligibility for grant funding, the opportunity of protocol assistance, the possibility to receive a fast track and expedited review process, as well as a seven-year period of market exclusivity after product approval

Good news/bad news... Likely they are using a very narrow definiton of people who qualify as "ITP". If they make the numbers higher then they may not qualify for the special designation which makes it possible for them to fast track and make money.
If it helps, then we want it on the market ASAP. On the other hand, once it's on the market they get additional protection to keep the cost high without competion.

But isn't this how Promacta and Nplate were developed and marketed? Without the orphan disease program, we might not have those two treatment options at all.
Personally, I have no problem at all with pharmaceutical companies recouping part of the huge amounts of capital which they invest in R&D to create new drugs specifically designed to treat just one oddball disease.
Unlike Prednisone, which pretty much "treats most anything for pennies"...as long as you can stand taking the stuff. ;)

I don't disagree that pharmaceutical companies should make a profit or recoup their capital. And if you have insurance or are low enough income to qualify for the pharmaceutical aid, the costs can be managed. However, there will be individuals in the USA who will not meet those criteria or countries with national health programs that will see delays before they can begin using them. Like I said, good news/bad news.
