Platelet Count and Exercise

Platelet Count and Exercise was created by Michelle
Why do my platelets go down when I exercise?
Seems like every time I go to the gym, I have a low count for the week - this week I have gone twice and I have six new bruises and red dots in my mouth. I go for my third Rituximab infusion tomorrow and I have a strong suspicion I've dropped from last week - and last week's count was already low.

I'm not banging myself at the gym either - just did the treadmill for an hour. And my husband pointed out that I was exercising like a mad woman at the time of diagnosis - I had taken up running and wanted to do a marathon.

I researched online and I have found differing information - some say exercise increases platelet count, others say it decreases it. I know Hemo will likely tell me they are not related.

Prednisone put 15 lbs on me. If I can't exercise, I'll never get it off. I lost over 80 lbs about two years ago and am terrified that it will all come back thanks to steroids.

Okay, I realize now I am just whining.

Anyone know anything about this or have a similar experience?

I noticed when I was exercising on the wii fit plus, mine seemed to go a bit higher, everyone is different and your platelets might react differently to someone elses, I think if you sensible, keep exercising, I am doing 30 mins 3 times a week on the walking machine and it is making me feel better, so if it makes u feel good, keep on with it, without exercise it us really had to keep the extra kilos off when your on the pred

Yeah I've recently taken up Zumba (aerobics with latin dance styles) and my count dropped, but that could also have been alcohol and stress. So as I'm off the drink and trying to tone up, I'll see how things go. But my haem said it was good i was exercising (so long as I don't overdo it) so it shouldn't have a bad effect on my count. I still have about 8lbs of steroid weight I want to lose, but it's stubborn (and I can really feel my bum wobbling when we jump about!)

An hour on the treadmill in one go does sound a bit excessive - could you maybe exercise more often but for shorter periods to give your body a bit more of a rhythm? There's shifting the weight and then there's making yourself ill and ending up back on the steroids and putting on even more weight! So easy does it I reckon - work at it, but don't push too hard. i really want some fit flops or something to tone up my bum, but they work by destabilising your feet, and as I've sprained 2 ankles and 1 knee, I don't think they're such a good idea on me!

Just as suspected, I did go down. Not a lot, but still.

I never considered an hour on the treadmill as excessive - I just walk at an incline. Maybe run for a few minutes, but not long.
I guess it is though, considering 30 minutes on most days is the recommendation.

Breaking it up is a good idea. I'll try that.

In the meantime, no response to the Rituximab yet. Got my third infusion. I know it's still early, but I'm hopeful I will show some kind of response soon.

Ok just at an incline isn't so bad - I thought you meant an hour of jogging/running! But i'd say keep it low impact and if the gym has other machines, do maybe 10 minutes on each (say running machine, cross trainer, rowing machine and cycling) so that you work lots of bits of you. We'll get there with the weight loss eventually!
