Has anyone tried Pantethine (produced from vitamin B5) to help lower bad cholesterol? Or tried anything else besides statins?

Recently, my lipid panel test results showed very high LDL (over 200). Haven’t been very active since the pandemic started and haven’t had the best diet so assuming that has something to do with it. I would prefer not to take statins. I started exercising again and changed my diet.
Heard about Pantethine which seems to lower LDL and have effects similar to prednisone. Potential side effect is that it lowers platelet aggregation but noticed that various supplements and even foods do as well.
Also, very curious if true that Pantethine has effects similar to prednisone, would it have positive effect on platelets.

I’m still on Promacta. Been on it for almost 8 years. 25mg keeps my counts around 50-60k.

Studies have shown a positive correlation between levels of Non-HDL C (like LDL) and platelet count. In fact, high Non-HDL C produces thrombocytosis (too many platelets) in mice. Right now I'm actually trying to increase my LDL intake to see if it helps my platelet count.

If you want to lower your LDL, you should try Moducare Sterinol, a combination of plant sterols, it is recommended in the supplements section of PDSA as benefiting platelets and also reducing LDL.  www.pdsa.org/vitamins-supplements.html
Take care!

No I will not purposely increase my LDL - heart attack would not be something I would strive for, or a stent or 2, or a bypass or 4.

Thanks all!
I was able to drop my LDL significantly within a couple of months by returning to a more healthy diet. Also cut out red meat and less animal protein and exercising again. No statins needed says doc.
I did try the pantethine briefly but it made me feel uneasy and jittery.

I have a healthy diet, mainly plant based with the odd bit of dairy and fish twice a week. I rarely eating red meat  and was gutted to discover my Lipid levels were elevated after a routine test at GPs.

Having had a long discussion with the GP practice pharmacist the cause of my dyslipidaemia  has been determined as 8 years of Prednisolone so I am now taking statins which are working. Annoyingly the damage is irreversible so I'm stuck on statins for life.

Prednisone is awful stuff. After being on it and also dexamethesone years ago I still have lingering gastro issues to this day.
