Wonder if anyone else had this test done. Mine showed a C677T Mutation (heterozygous) and a A1298C Mutation (heterozygous). I have been doing google searches, but it has not been particularly useful.

Have you tried searching in OMIM, the online Mendelian Inheritance in Man, database at omim.org/ ?

I think this is what you're looking for:
omim.org/entry/607093?search=a1298c&highlight=a1298c

More information can be found by using PubMed at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed .
Good luck in your search.

Emily,
I read your post the other day and it didn't mean too much to me. But today I was reading an article about the Pope's statement on GMO's and this letter popped out at me. This person talks about the MTHFR gene and how it has effected her.

Jane June 16, 2015 at 07:15 - Reply
It’s very sad that people have been led to believe that GMO’s have been proven safe for humans to consume. When in truth, for 30 years now, no testing has been done on either side of the isle. I am very sick now with CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome). A major cause of this illness is the ingestion of GMO’s & Glyphosate, because they both are a byproduct of a fungus (a toxin). I have been genetically tested and was born with two mutant genes. One of these genes is the HLA-DR gene and the other is MTHFR gene. These genes make me extremely susceptible to toxins (contaminated GMO’s & Glyphosate). Since I have this genetic mutation, I can not detox mycotoxins naturally from my body. Therefore, all of these foods are nothing more than poison to my system and are now slowly killing me. Please, let me be the proof, test me for Glyphosate. See the damage that has been done to my body. Do not just label the GMO’s, please STOP MONSANTO from poisoning the entire world. Please make GMO’s and Glyphosate illegal to produce and use. I’m begging you, not for just me, but for the future of all humans worldwide.

Here is the source, her letter is under the comments section:

sustainablepulse.com/2015/06/16/pope-francis-slams-gmos-and-pesticides-for-environmental-and-social-damage/

Hope this can help you in some way.

I have been reading a lot about GMO's lately and what I'm finding is not good. There are so many articles that lead people to believe that they are good for us...but that is what they want us to believe. If you dig, you can find the truth. The fact that other countries are banning GMO's is very telling. GMO's are poison. I had not heard the Pope speak about that but I wish I had. Maybe I can Youtube it.

I have also been reading about Mycoplasma being found in vaccines. Mycoplasma has been linked to triggering ITP. You don't hear much about it though. Also, in people with weak immune systems, Mycoplasma's can cause serious infection and other illnesses. Look up Dr. Maurice Hillerman. He worked at Merck for many years and had a lot to say about vaccines after he retired. Or this guy:

I have had that done and have a MTHFR A1298C homozygous mutation. I asked my hematologist if/how it related to my ITP and he did not know. The doctor who ordered the test said it was preventing me from properly absorbing B Vitamins. My B levels are ok in my blood. I think MTHFR has to do with the methylation cycle, detox and production of glutathione. Also have to keep an eye on homocystine levels. Also I was told that just because I have the mutation does not mean it is expressed or causing disease. My sons have the mutation you mentioned so my husband must have the C677T. They both have Autoimmune disorders and can no longer get vaccinated. Also one of them had severe mycoplasma pneumonia that led to autoimmune encephalitis. He got ivig for it and it was life saving.

Thank you all so much. My hematologist also knows very little about the links to autoimmune disorders, but luckily is more than willing to keep digging. I am having a micronutrient test done through SpectraCell which might shed some light on deficiencies. The naturopath said that my MTHFR results suggest that I stay away from "fortified foods" as my body cannot break down folic acid--at least that is what I think he said.
I appreciate the input.

It's good that they found it and that you can stay on top of it. I hope it all turns out well.

Here is a great radio blog on the dangers of GMO and glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup. This is a scientist who has spent a lot of time studying the issue. It is scary!

www.blogtalkradio.com/drjessarmine/2015/01/06/gmos-and-genetics--roundup-behind-our-health-crisis

I personally think my platelets crash when I have been overexposed to Roundup. Just like last November. I bought some persimmons from a local farmer who told me he sprayed around his trees with Roundup to keep the weeds down. I was hesitant to buy them, but went ahead anyways. And my platelets crashed. Glyphosates has been linked to lymphoma. Lymphoma is white blood cell cancer. I always wondered why the deer stayed away from his persimmons, and eat all of mine when I live only 1/2 mile away!

"FRIDAY, MAY 23, 2014

Scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer have found what appears to be a strong link between pesticide exposure and a blood cancer called non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Analyzing 44 individual research projects published since 1980, the scientists, writing in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, said that people exposed to the weed killer glyphosate, marked by Monsanto under the brand name Roundup, had double the risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Those exposed to 2,4-D, another potent weed killer marketed by Dow Chemical, were 40 percent more likely to develop this disease.

The authors, scientists who work in the IARC Section of Environment and Radiation in Lyon, France, theorized that these pesticides were causing genetic mutations in white blood cells, thereby weakening the body’s immune system and ability to fight off disease.

Previous studies have observed that farmers with exposure to 2,4-D have experienced impaired immune systems."

Yes. My daughter has it, her homocystine was 25(way high, from 8-10 is normal). According to her integrative alternative doctor is part of the puzzle. About 9 years ago she was facing the following: platelets at 8k, very high ana, possitive DS-Dna(this one is lupus). fast forward 9 years, she takes no medications, her last count was 182k and she has not symptoms what so ever. thanks God. What worked you might ask. Immune modulating beta Glucans, special B vitamins to address MTHFR, 10,0000 iu vitamin d3, great probiotics, three months of the silver/aloe protocol.

All little digging into my gene testing records show I have this MTHFR variant as well. The SNPedia entry is helpful:

www.snpedia.com/index.php/Rs1801133

Last year my hematologist found a folate deficiency, so I now supplement that. I also have a B12 deficiency that requires supplementation. I just started with a new PCP and will be seeing a new rheumatologist soon. I can add this issue to my list of questions for them.

I don't know if I've ever been tested for MTHFR, but I have many chronic deficiencies. Seems to go along wit autoimmune disorders, plus many people tend to have other things going on that they are not aware of, like this.

My understanding at this point is that it's important to catch the downstream effects, in this case micronutrient deficiencies, and correct them. The various factors that lead to these effects are far from completely understood, so I'd rather not jump to conclusions. But it is quite interesting.

I had a lot of testing like that done years ago, but I'm not sure what tests were done. This was before I learned to get copies of labs.

I just had another round of testing and am seeing new doctors, so I'm collecting and saving records from everything I'm doing. I didn't keep such good records when my problems started and wish I had. Doing that was one of the best suggestions I came across for living with a chronic condition. My new doctors are thrilled that I have years worth of records, from lab results and imaging studies to physician summaries of office visits. They seem to dislike having to request/obtain old records from prior physicians.

Just for balance..

www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/dubious-mthfr-genetic-mutation-testing/

"As a real geneticist, Charis Eng, MD, PhD, points out, none of this means genetic testing is necessary. For some problems, there are cheaper alternatives that give better information. If high homocysteine levels are suspected, the simple solution is a blood test. If the blood test bears this out, supplementation with vitamins such as B6, B12, and folate or folic acid can be recommended. If the levels are normal, nothing need be done, whether the mutation is present or not."

and

"There are no recommended changes in management that are linked to specific test results."
