Running and ITP

Running and ITP was created by Polo
I was wondering if it is safe to run with a platelet count of 10,000 or less. My doctor told me no to do any type of contact sports, however I was wondering if running was ok. When I say running I'm talking about jogging/running at a moderate pace for 2 miles or so. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Polo,

I can't imagine why not - if you were planning to start training for the marathon then that'd be different! The thing with contact sports is the risk of bruising and bleeding from crashing into people and/or banging your head. A bit of light exercise on the other hand will probably do you the world of good as long as you're sensible about it, ie warm up/warm down, stretch, don't overdo it, let someone know where you're going and take a mobile phone with you in case you get into trouble. The things that most regular runners do anyway!

I joined the gym at work earlier this year, and I feel much healthier - even if it hasn't had some sort of magical effect on bumping up my platelets, i've felt like i've got more energy, and i've only had one cold so far this year (usually by now i'm onto a 2nd or 3rd!)

the most important thing I'd say though is to know your limits and not push yourself too hard. sometimes with ITP you'll feel absolutely fine, and other times you'll be utterly exhausted. listen your body and know when to stop - running yourself ragged is only going to make you feel worse!

I am an avid gym rat/runner/walker. I think as long as you are careful you should be okay. But I definitely would consult with my doctor because every patient is different. I did a 33 mile backpacking hike with my son for boy scouts with platelets under 30 (cant remember the exact number maybe lower), but my hematologist was impressed with my strength and energy. She has a boy scout and they have never completed that hike and they are "well". LOL So good for you, if you are feeling good I say GO FOR IT! I for one don't let any of my health issues dictate what goes on in my life.

Have a wonderful weekend!!! :)

If you have the energy for it and do not fall you will be fine. I would'nt push it to hard though. Pace yourself.
Good Luck.

You are braver than I. I wouldn't run with such a low platelet count. But you need to work with your hematologist. Remember: 10,000 is an important threshhold number. Docs get nervous at 10K and less.

I think running with ITP is fine. I have run with counts below 10,000 and above. I was diagnosed in Oct 09 and have had counts up and sown since. I decided to train for my first marathon in January to keep the weight and bloating off from the pred. In two weeks I will attempt to complete the Buffalo Marathon!
