Sandi wrote: Dean - you have to taper off of Celexa. Some doctors will tell you it's not nhecessary, but I found that it most definitely was. It took me 4 years to get off of it. I realized I wasn't in any real hurry, but wanted to get back to actually feeling again.

I tried to stop cold turkey and had so many withdrawal symptoms I was a mess.

As with every medication we do not all respond the same. Believe I started out with 40mg, then tapered to 20 which is what I have been taking for several years. When I was feeling myself again I decided not to refill it. My wife was Furious that I had stopped cold turkey and did not tell her. The depression returned, but not as bad. So is that considered withdrawl symptoms? The 40mg pills are scored so it can be split into 20mg. Is there another taper from 20mg or is 20mg the last taper for this pill? I am going in for my yearly appointment today and going to suggest getting off Celexa. I just want to get off the medication.

This is what happened to me: My pharmacy accidentally gave me Lipitor instead of Celexa. I didn't notice the different pills since they looked similar, I took them at night and of course, I trusted them. One day out of the blue, I started to feel like my skin was crawling, and was disoriented and walking into walls. I was very irritable and had no idea what was going on. I had just finished Rituxan for the first time and was stressed at work, so I thought it was one of those things.

About three weeks after I had the script filled, I was sitting in bed one night and just decided to look up the numbers on the pills. That was when I discovered what had happened. I went to the pharmacy the next day and got the right pills - the pharmacist is a friend of mine and felt so bad about it I couldn't be upset. Within 24 hours, I was back to normal.

Anyway, that was when I realized that I had to get off of them slowly. I started to read other experiences of Celexa tapering and saw that other people had horrible withdrawal also - some the same as me and some different.

I got a script for 10 mg pills and did 20/15 on alternate days for a long time, then went to 15. Then I did 15/10 on alternate days for a long time....you get the idea. I kept doing that until I got to 5 (broke the 10's in half). I even did 5 mg's every other day for a while. Like I said, it took me a long time and I didn't have any problems doing it that way.

I even read that some people who quit cold turkey had permanent side effects such as dizziness. My GP told me I didn't need to taper but he was wrong. Hence, my mistrust of doctors (just one of many stories).
