Had last treatment of Rituxan last week with Vincristine. Tapering the Pred down, but my hubby made me a crab boil and a strawberry margarita last night and I have not had alcohol in months. I was a regular drinker, could it be the alcohol??????? I stop drinking cold turkey, it wasn't like I drink liquor more beer and wine.

Amber, I am not a drinker, never have been. But, from what I've read on the ITP fb page, people have mentioned that drinking does lower your platelets. I wouldn't think that you should be drinking while your platelets on in the danger zone.

My hema told me alcohol has been shown to lower platelet production and thus said it was fine to have a drink once in a "safe zone" but not to be drinking any when counts low and receiving active treatment..I was also told to be quite cautious with any alcohol with prednisone. The hema told me that there are not known contraindications between them but both can irritate the GI tract. My pharmacist also independently told me that as well.

I try to stay away from alcohol since I noticed that a drink or 2 of wine will cause my count to drop. Also, I think alcohol is a blood thinner...so, please be careful since your count is low at this time.

Yesterday 19k and today 4k and no alcohol... Processed food? had fresh sea food/veg on Sunday night and fish sticks with vegs last night? Will try to do fresh none process food tonight but it is really hard with me/hubby working and his school on Tuesday afternoon/night. I know processed food isn't good for you but with the infusion center and working its hard for me to cook real food...

Amber - I don't think anything you are eating is affecting your counts by the day. Just try to eat as healthy as you can for the short term (salads, etc) and avoid alcohol while counts are down.

Amber one is what Sandy said:

quote: "Amber - I don't think anything you are eating is affecting your counts by the day. Just try to eat as healthy as you can for the short term (salads, etc) and avoid alcohol while counts are down."

This here is a very good suggestion.

Any ideas I've had have already been said. Not sure how good they are....

One thing diet-wise that may help is going gluten-free. It's time consuming, difficult and expensive, but no side effects and it's very healthy. There are many stories of people with autoimmune disorders improving after giving up gluten. I'd go so far as to say it's probably the diet change that helps people the most. Juicing also seems to be getting a lot of attention as far as helping autoimmune disorders.

I've done both and it's a tough commitment. But when you're desperate enough, you make it work. It makes sense and does not destroy the body like meds do; it repairs the body.

I've been drinking fresh wheatgrass juice from Farmer's market and making my own payapa leaf extract for 3 years now...I do not see any differences in my count...but I still take them since they are healthy for you.

It never hurts to try....

Amber,

Happy juicing! I bet you went a bit crazy with buying all kinds of fruits and veggies at the grocery store! :)

Hopefully, juicing will give you more energy and PLATELETS!

Keep up your spirits...tomorrow is a new week.

I hope you enjoy the new juicer. My favorite recipe is beets, carrots and orange juice. I always see that recipe described as a blood cleanser. It seems to get rid of my bruises so I like it. Plus it tastes great.

Here's some more recipes.
juicerecipes.com/health/benefits/juicing-to-cleanse-blood/

Just be careful of ingredients like ginger, that's a blood thinner so you'd probably want to avoid any blood thinning ingredients while your counts are so low.

7k today

Sem40

I don't have any ginger but I did think about it being a blood thinner. I do need to go get more apples. Right now I do 1 beet, 4 carrots, 2 stalks of celery, 4-6 leafs kale, just grab the cilantro, 1 apple. Had one last night and this morning will have another tonight.

That sounds great. I also like to make kale lemonade sometimes with kale, lemons and oranges. Have fun with the new juicer!

8K again today but no platelets, there is a shortage of platelets. Then got a call after I left to go to work that they will have them late morning. I said (i'm not bleeding or bruising and have to come back at 8am for re check of counts, I'll be fine and want to give my body a break). Then got another call about an hour ago from doctors office saying if I start bleeding to go to ER. (well the infusion center is open until 5, I'll go there since the infusion lady said I can just walk in at any point today to get them). Oh and the doctors office said no shaving?? I'm not stupid and been shaving for over 20 years....???

Either way this is where I am at today.
