7k this morning 8k after Rituxan and 1k after platelets. So I am in the hospital until my counts get to save zone. Got another round of platelets and IVIG's soon then CBC. Head a nose bleed for 17 hours, bruising everywhere and red spots all over my feet (so far).

Amber,

I'm sorry to hear this. Glad to hear that you're able to go home. It just seem that you can't get a break from ITP. I hope that rituxan will work again for you. You really need a breather from all of this.

Please keep up your spirits.

Counts at 8k this morning. Had a nice long talk with the doctor. Since I am not responding to any of the treatments. Taking my spleen out wouldn't help I would be in the same boat after the surgery. As of the Platelets and Steroids (given 3 days in a row) is the standard to get things jumped started. I am staying on the Rituxan for the 4 rounds (3 more to go) and may add other Chemos on top of it. He said I'm the small % that a lot of treatments do not work, and if I got the spleen out it would be days or months then I would be doing the treatment that we are going with now. So no point in getting it out, also getting vaccinations today just in case of an emergency (bleeding out) and have no choice but to get it out. Also we have given the treatments time to work, like the promacta I was on it almost 3 months and only suppose to be on 2 weeks to see if it will work. N-Plate the side effect were horrible on me and my family.

I would be cautious Amber of allowing them to give you IM injections for your vaccinations if your platelets are 8. I know you are under the care of physicians so they can better advise but I would be aware to ask before they give you the needles.

Yep asked all the vaccines questions this morning since I work in the animal field and know a lot about vaccinations. They are all killed vaccinations.

I was more meaning because of the injection itself and possibility of it causing bleeding/ excessive bruising. But the non live vaccine definitely also important.

With low platelets they should do injections subcutaneously rather than into the muscle. If you have bleeding in the muscle you can end up with compartment syndrome with a risk of losing the limb. (I didn't learn that from Google, but from nurse training.)

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

Once I started getting platelets the nose bleed slowed down. That was the only thing that helped

Just curious - in another thread, can't find it, you said your doctor said you were in the group where spleen removal would do no good [hope I remembered that correctly] - how was that determined?

Hope that count rebounds.

He said that I am not responding to the medications (that works with taking spleen out) like I should. So if I take the spleen out I would be in the same boat that I am now. Having to try other medications (adding chemo on). Spleen removal would only last a couple of months if that. So taking the spleen out would only hurt me in the long run, since I am already having to try other medications (Vincristine). I got it this past Wednesday with Rituxan and will get again next Wednesday.

so what he is saying since treatments you are taking now aren't working, if you had your spleen out and counts dropped those treatments wouldn't work? thanks for explaining.

Yes so there is no point in having surgery, we are already trying everything. Plus how can they do surgery when counts are so low? I would think they would have to get them up so high so it would be safe??

and counts 7k again today and will be see the infusion center for cbc's until Thursday ( they had to change my treatment days due to the fact my doctor is off that day)
