Leo I'm so sorry this happened to you.
I do question your doctor - I know someone who at the age of 40 after eating almonds for years had an anaphylactic reaction to them, years he had eaten them and then that happened, he eats them again he could die.  I can never have penicillin again because of very serious reaction to amoxicillin - my doctors know not to give it to me!

I am fortunate to have a wonderful hematologist - he loves blood.  I honestly don't know much about the treatments - prednisone put me in a remission (counts low but stable & ok) and then a tetanus booster sent the count to the gutter and 1 WinRho IV had me back on trick - so I'm not much help to you there.   With the count of 15k do you have symptoms?   Can you get a 2nd opinion?

ITP and Covid-19 was created by thomaskm
Of course it had to be me that got to try out the Covid-19 along with chronic ITP. I have not posted in over a year as I have been well maintained with minimum Nplate injections weekly for over a year averaging 160+, then every 2 weeks at 140+ for a year, and this August moved to Nplate every 3 weeks at a steady 120-135 range. My Hemo and I are striving for "minimum" Nplate while maintaining 120+ and it has been working. Nplate is known to be totally out of your system in 28 days so the 3 week interval insures I have some Nplate on board during my treatment cycle. It is also of note that when I acquired a sinus infection 2 years ago I pegged a 217 on Amoxicillin. On 11/7/2020 I awoke with throat clearing phlegm, later in the day I spiked a 101.5 fever. The next day the body aches hit, my eye muscles got sore and stiff and had a productive cough. Monday I made an appointment at the local Covid-19 testing center. My wife and I saw a Dr., were tested, and given Augmentin to address his diagnosis of sinus infections. 5 days later I got the call I was Covid-19 positive. ( yes we were careful). The call came 4 days ahead of my next Nplate injection. I notified my Hemo, my treatment was cancelled, and I could not get a blood draw or injection at the cancer center I use until the CDC required 14 day quarantine lapsed. I was advised to monitor for bruising, petechia, and report to an emergency room if ITP symptoms appeared, they did not. This Tuesday I was ushered into the "Covid" room for my blood draw which came back with a 416! After 5 weeks with no Nplate injection! It was reassuring that my immune system kicked Rona's azz ( it was a rough trip with 2 weeks of fever, cough, and aches) and was diverted from attacking my platelets. I fully expect to drop numbers over the coming weeks and return to my 3 week injection cycle as my T-cells are no longer distracted by Covid. I do hold out hope that they may have been retrained! This trip was made harder by the open hernia repair I had on 10/27 where the surgeon basically destroyed the inguinal nerve leading to my left testicle so every cough was like a groin kick. The November from hell!

Farewell forever as far as im concerned

Never say never! I did that years ago when I was put on prednisone for serum sickness from amoxicillin - said I'd NEVER take that vile drug again. Well then in the spring of 1989 ITP hit and almost 4 years of prednisone.

When I saw how you were tapering pred I thought your doctor was going too fast. Just throwing in my thought - because when I was cut from 60mg to 30mg as they wanted me off it before moving to Tokyo my count hit the gutter.

My itp story was created by Sergeevna
Hi everybody! I want to tell my story. (ssory, i dnt speak english well, its googlle translator)
I live in Ukraine. I am 32 years old.
In February 2019, I froze on the street, came home and went to bed. In the evening my head hurt and my whole body was in blisters, on my hands, face, and temperature 38. I was taken to the hospital and said that it was not measles, they told me to wait and it would pass. And so it happened. It went sharply in three days. And how it started bruising the body (thrombocytopenia started)
Treatment - prednisone, metipred, did not grow at all. I lived for 3 months with platelets of 4 thousand, doctors offered the mabter, I refused. I read a lot, everywhere! I decided to treat Helicobacter (but my hematologist forbade me to treat it). And in two weeks of treatment, amoxicillin + clarithromycin - platelets rose to 86. But after a week they fell to 30 thousand.
Then I started to be treated with herbs, here in Ukraine, people drink nettles, etc., yarrow, etc. - it did not help me.
I lived with platelets 30 all summer and autumn ... We also have a group of thrombocytopenia, and there the girl advised Vadim Braverman, he treats me via Skype, he is a psychologist and an energy therapist ... I don’t know how it is))) "I read I decided to try someone else’s success story too. I wrote to him ... And he almost brought me back to life in three weeks! There can be no coincidence, since the platelets were all summer 30, and then right after working with him they became 52 and a little more later 95. I wrote about it on VKontakte. You can stop by to read. After it I became a normal person again, without panic FIR attacks and bruises)))
I go here with google translator to find out who helps what
Health to all!

LOL, not truly allergic to amoxicillin because you didn't go into anaphylactic shock, so ok to take. Oh my.

But no reaction to Amox this time, right? I bet there is more to know about antibiotic reactions and EBV motivated ITP. Maybe the skin reaction is an indicator as to whether one has become candidate for ITP relapse.

Notice this study investigating Spironolactone affects on EBV. They used the antibiotic Doxycycline to stimulate EBV replication.

Hal, amox has never given me a reaction before last year. I had only ever had a bad allergic reaction to an antibiotic they gave me after labor and delivery some 8 years ago. I never found out which one it was, unfortunately. But anyways, then last year (either early or mid 2018) I took myself to the doctor because I felt god awful and feared I either had Strep or a sinus infection. Strep swab came back negative, but urgent care doc still prescribed a round of Amox just in case :/ I took it but noticed after a few days that I was itching all over my body constantly. At night, my skin even burned and I had a bunch of little rashes on my stomach. I decided, probably not smartly, to stop taking it since it was prescribed just in case anyways. I figured I had developed a reaction and have kept that in mind since. I informed my GP about that, but she rightly still prescribed it for a reason I don’t quite understand. She decided along with my hemo that I’m not truly allergic to it and to go ahead and take it since any antibiotic could potentially cause a flare up of the ITP. The Rituxan was done earlier this March, if you recall, by the way. Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Don't want to let this one go by. Some questions Carcamoc. With a mid 200 count, we must learn from you :)

Is it correct to say that you've had rashes/hives from Amox or other antibiotics in the past? But not this time?
In Sandi's posts she commented that counts would fall with Amox. Then, sometime later, Amox no longer crashed them. I am wondering if Sandi took Rituxan between those events. That is, perhaps Rituxan cleared out enough EBV so that Amox no longer caused a reaction.

So I wonder the same thing with you. Do you no longer have problems with Amox now that you've taken Rituxan?
Have I got the situation correct?

Thought I would update here after my latest follow up with hemo. This week platelets held steady in the mid 200Ks even after the Strep & Amoxicillin. I’m going to stay vigilant in case of any late effects, but for now I was finally switched to once a month labs and a follow up in 3 months. I’m very excited to finally slow down after what feels like forever of constant labs, doctor’s visits, and hospital stays. Hemo seemed comfortable with crediting a late response to Rituxan for this remission and hopes I can get years out of it as others have. Thanks for reading, I hope you all have been doing alright :)

MelA, take a look at this post:
pdsa.org/discussion-group/6-general-itp-discussion/26694-celexa-caused-my-itp.html#27395
Bear in mind. Originally she had only ITP and not Lupus. I'm pretty sure that is what she was referring to - how she 'acquired' ITP.

The chain of events I mentioned/theorized was Amoxicillin -> EBV -> ITP. So absolutely. The connection between the three was strictly by me and not Wiki. Wiki made the connection between Amoxicillin and EBV. Sandi's comment made the connection between Amoxicillin and ITP.

Hal Sandi has Lupus and last I heard [unless I'm wrong] her ITP is due to or 2nd to lupus.
What happens to one doesn't necessarily happen to the other!
Did that wikipedia article say there is a link between amoxicillin triggering ITP? I did not see any reference to ITP in that article, did you? The reference used for that 80-90% quote is from 1977, rather old.

This is part of what Sandi wrote in August 2010 - notice the word "suspected" and the rest of it, some wise thoughts:
"I have had two suspected platelet drops after taking Amoxicillin, but I have not discouraged any one from using it. Two reasons: 1) it may not affect them as it did me, and 2) my experience could have been a coincidence and there is no way to prove that it caused counts to drop. I would not blindly state that a certain drug could cause harm to everyone because it may have happened to me. "
