Will get the platelets counted again on Monday. I'm taking a tiny children's aspirin (80 mg) in the morning and at bed time for peace of mind really. My hemotologist thought I would be just fine...he said if they were 1000 or more he would have been concerned.

Also figured out my pain med weaning issues. Talked to the pharmacist and she suggested 1/2 percocet every four hours and Alieve every 6 -8 hours as needed. Finally seem to be feeling better without the crashes.

It's a lot to get used to, new counts, the healing, etc. Wow, 600, I think you're off to a great start, they'll probably settle down soon. I think the BM has a lot to do with the stress you've been through and then not as much physical activity. I'm getting nervous, (end of the month for me) it is a tad scary to go through this. It better be worth it!!!
Wouldn't it be nice to not have worry about your count all the time? I sure hope you get a long remission.

Fran,
1 month ago tomorrow I had my splenectomy. My counts did go over a million. I was put on agrylin and they went to 524k. I was freaked out too, but my hematologist never was. It's so ironic to worry about too many platelets isn't it? It took me about 3 weeks before I felt almost normal. Now I am completely normal unless I get bumped on my incision, that hurts. So glad you feel you made the right choice!

Hey future Spleen removal candidates...don't be too nervous. It is better than you think. Of course it is serious and there is pain and recovery...but you can totally do it! I'm amazed how well it went. Things I was worried about didn't happen and things I didn't expect did. So just go with the flow folks...take everything as it comes and do your best. You'll be fine. Good luck to you all! Keep us posted on your progress. High platelets to you all!!!

Joya,
Good luck to you Monday. I know how you feel. My recovery after the splenectomy is going well. 9 days later very little discomfort. It is still pinch me I can't believe I had the surgery after so much deliberation. I am driving and shopping. The anticipation was greater than the actual event. Please keep us posted.

Platelets still high. 829,000 today but my hemotologist is completely calm about it all. He says this is the expected result and they WILL go down and get into a normal range soon. I can take aspirin twice a day if I need peace of mind...so I am. Bonus though...I've lost 14 pounds! So mixed results....

I went back to work today part time and it went well. Very very tired and sat a lot but I made it through. Nap time now!

The weight loss is mostly due to the major decrease in appetite due to the medicines/pain killers. Plus I've been walking a lot to keep the bowels going and improve my stamina and flexibility. I'm off the meds starting today (scary) and I think my appetite will come back eventually. The spleen only weighs about a pound so the rest is from the major decrease in my food intake. I'm hooked on my sugar free popsicyles and eating about 1/2 or less of my normal diet intake. I am kind of happy about the weight loss....a nice little side effect!

Officially weened off the pain killers now! Yippee!!! Only thing left is to build up my stamina. I'm definitely taking lots of naps and pacing myself. Platelets are still high but I'll get them checked every week for a bit until they settle in. My hemotologist is pleased and calm about my levels so I'll just have to trust things will work out.
