Splenectomy

Splenectomy was created by FranL
My splenectomy is scheduled for March 30th. I was originally scheduled for March 23rd but during my pre-op visit on the 22nd my surgeon decided that my platelets were too low to move forward with it. I've been taking an increased dose of Promacta (75mg) and they were at 41,000 which is high for me...but he insisted they needed to be at 50,000 minimum. So IVIG treatment today to boost them up. Will get a blood count tomorrow and if they haven't gone up enough I'll get another IVIG treatment on Saturday. Hopefully moving forward with splenectomy on Tuesday.

IVIG treatment on Thursday. Platelets up to 72,000 Friday morning. My nurse said they should continue to go up as the treatment hasn't really kicked in full effect yet. I started to feel pretty rough Friday afternoon and had serious headaches and nausea last night so I guess it has kicked in now. I go back to get my platelets counted Sunday morning. If they are good I'm on for surgery Tuesday. If not so good I'll get another IVIG treatment Sunday and hope they hold till surgery Tuesday.

Denise,

Since you are starting Rituxan so soon after your BMB, that makes me think that you really only have ITP! Have you ever thought of that? My hemo waited a little while after all the testing to watch my platelets for a while and to see if they would have a comeback on their own (which they didn't). I am a total supporter of Rituxan and I think that you will agree! Those 4 rounds have worked for me for a year now! That's a whole year without the constant fretting, googling, and uncertainty! And...it was a breeze for me. Like I said, I slept the entire time. If you're like me I like sleeping, so it was a rather pleasant experience (haha). Good luck with everything and keep us posted! We care about your recovery! Also, what is your current count? I'm just curious :)

Really? Wow...what has your lowest count been? To me, 66 is not that low! I only had 17! *sigh* yet another reason why you shouldn't worry! Many people in this forum would kill for 66! Good for you! I'm curious as to your story...how did you find out about the disease in the first place? Like, for me I had a horrendous nosebleed!

Platelets up to 83,000. Everything looks like a go for Tuesday. The IVIG treatment was difficult. Well, the day after was...I was very nauseious and throwing up with a killer headache for about 36 hours. SO glad they don't have to repeat it today.

I had a similar bad experience with 1 IVIG and 1 Anti D, not every time though just once of each type? Sometimes pre treating with benadryl can help and also make sure you drink lots of water prior and after. Hopefully you don't have to do it again. I sure hope it all works out great. Good luck for Tuesday.

Splenectomy is over and all went well. It was totally different than I had feared...better. I was up and walking the next day and got out of the hospital the next (so only two days in the hospital). Surgeon said it went really well, my platelets are up to 186,000, and with the pain meds I am doing quite well. Thanks for all the well wishes folks!! :)

Thanks everyone! I continue to do well as long as I take my meds on time. Sleeping better but still no appetite. If anyone wants the details of the surgery feel free to email me and I'll tell you all about it. Like I said, it was much better than I anticipated. Pretty sure I made the right decision. High platelets to you all!!

Pain medicine is Percocet...generic version anyway. I am still pretty dependent on it every 4 hours. Trying to stretch out the time but I end up feeling really really bad. Follow up with the surgeon tomorrow and will probably get a platelet count done then but not sure. One thing is worrying me a bit and this may be too much info, but I haven't had a bowel movement yet. 8 days! Tried dried prunes and lots of salad, then a half dose of laxative, then a full dose of a laxative, and today Milk of Magnesia. Hoping something happens soon. I don't have pain, and I do have gas, just very strange... Walking lots, drinking lots of water, eating fiber. It is a mystery.

Holy Crap! My platelets have skyrocketed to 823,000! My surgeon says everything looks ok and my hemotologist said this was to be expected after splenectomy and they should settle into a normal count soon. I'm on a daily dose of aspirin and totally freaked out by it. Gotta listen to my doctors though...they are not concerned.

Good news Fran. I had lap splenectomy surgery last Thursday, April 1. Yesterday my platelets were 671k. Very happy with that news. By the way the surgeon said I had an accessory spleen which he removed...two for one.

Trying to ween off percocet...it's hard! Taking 1/2 dose and big dose of acetaminopen every four hours. Will see how that goes. My prescription runs out Saturday and I'm a little uneasy about that. I'm improving so it will probably be ok.

Movement is a lot easier. Walking lots and having little outings to the mall and such. Bowel movements are few and far between but they are happening thank goodness. Milk of Magnesia seems to do the trick.

Also the surgical glue and scabs are peeling off and the incisions underneath look really healthy and TINY! Such a relief! They are about 1/4 the size of the scabs on top.

All in all...I'm feeling better each day. Still no appetite and taking it easy...but better each day.

Thanks to all for the help and encouragement! High platelets to you all!!!

Fran
