CAN MENSTRUAL BLEEDING AFFECT YOUR PLATELET COUNT was created by gothicgirl
So 2 weeks ago my count was 137 today it was 81, after seeing the Dr 2 weeks ago I made my own decision not to continue with the contraceptive injection. I had only had one previously but from when I had it I never felt ''well''. Once Id had it I never had a period for the 3 months but the week before I should have had the next one I started bleeding, and it lasted until 3 days ago...10 days in total, and so I was just wondering if this could have had some effect on my count today.

There would be some lost platelets but I'm not sure if it's significant. The hormonal changes before and after might have an impact but I don't think it's been studied so it's too hard to know. Are you on prednisone?

That's a great question that I would like to know the answer to as well!
I'm about to start my period.. and my count was 31 on Tuesday. But I'm tapering the Pred.. so if it goes up or down, it's hard to say what's causing it.

I can't imagine actual bleeding affecting the platelet count. After all, you are losing platelets but you are also losing plasma etc so that the count of platelets per drop of blood will be the same. However, there is some sort of fluctuation of count that happens with the hormonal changes. Also, the count often fluctuates with ITP. Mine does and I'm past periods.

Gothicgirl,

My doctor said that my counts should not drop due to my period. But I was tracking my counts, pred dose, side affects, changes in counts, while I was being treated and I was able to see that for several months my counts dropped the week of my period and the week after my period. This must have happened for atleast 5 months, and not all 5 months were consecutive. I don't know if this was just a coincidence or if there was a connection. But as a result, I decided not to lower my pred dose the week of my period, just to be safe.

I've noticed my count is affected, but I think it's due to the hormonal change each month. Depending on the time of the month I'm tested, my counts have a pattern of being higher or lower.

I've long thought, in my case, that my ITP was tied to my hormones especially since my ITP was discovered with my first pregnancy in 2005. I've had ITP ever since. About a year ago I switched to Seasonale for a BCP where you only cycle once every 3 months. After taking it for 9-10 months, I had my first normal count of 176K. I haven't had a normal count since 2005 and I strongly feel the BCP and hormones had an affect. I won't know until I monitor for awhile so I guess it remains to be seen...

I was on a BCP when I was first diagnosed, and I feel like that was the only reason my count got up to 98.. cause as soon as I stopped it, it dropped to 42... I was wondering if effected the Prednisone...

Where you (or are) on Presnisone?

if we are coming up with theories, I think my ITP was trigger by the bcp. Almost six months after starting the pill I was diagnosed with ITP and plt count were at 8.

well Im still not convinced that it wasnt the contraceptive injection that caused or contributed to me getting ITP because I felt unwell from the day I had it, but was also taking anti depressants and Ibuprofen as well, which I know can all be triggers too.

Prednisone and birth control do interact. Taking birth control can increase the effects of the pred. Apparently they're both destroyed by the same mechanism in the liver and they compete with one another, so if you take bc, then you have more pred in your system.

well i wasnt taking pred when i was on the birth control and now i am refusing to take any form of medication other than those prescribed for necessary medical conditions lol so hopefully that will sort that part out lol

I know this is an old post, but I also feel that my platelets are affected by my period and hormone levels. I have been researching this, as well as a friend helping me out. She found this article regarding platelet counts and different phases of the menstrual cycle.

Way I understand things the question worded the other way round then yes, can the platelet count affect menstrual bleeding and the answer is definately yes! We can bleed heavier and a variety of issues can arise from that.

but whether menstrual bleeding affect the platelet count? I dont think so in that they believe the antibodies don't recognise the platelets and fight them....

In 2005, I had bleeding that would not stop, very heavy and big clots. My ob/gyn did every test imaginable except bloodwork until I asked for it. I was bruising and thought I was anemic. I was right but I also had a platelet count of 2000. After a week in the hospital and diagnosis of ITP, the fun began.
For the next 3 years, whenever my doc lowered my Prednisone to 5 mg/day the heavy bleeding started again and the platelet count plummeted. The curse would last for weeks and one time I had to have a transfusion (3units). I asked the doc if low platelets caused bleeding or if bleeding caused low platelets and he did not know.
I became menapausal in late 2008 and my ITP has been in remission for nearly two years now with only a couple of relapses. Was it the curse, Predisone or ITP that caused all the problems? Only the shadow knows...
