Hi all - I'm fairly new to all of this (diagnosed 2016 w/platelet count in the 40s.) The last time I saw the hematologist (two months ago) - my count was up to 101 (yeah!). They think I had an allergic reaction to a low-dose antibiotic (Macrobid - was on it for 9 months for recurrent UTIs.) Okay - haven't had a UTI in a long time - but because I am always afraid I'm going to get one, my urologist gave me sulfa/bactrim to take after sex, or if I get an infection. Well that's what just happened but when I read about Bactrim, it of course says NOT to use it if you have blood platelet disorders. Ugh...

Has anyone had experience with recurrent UTIs and any 'safe' antibiotics? Perhaps if I take this for 3 days -- it won't have too much of an effect on my blood count? I know 101 is pretty good - but it used to be 250!

Thanks in advance for any feedback! UTIs ughhhhhhhhhhhh

Yikes! I'd actually be more concerned with all that antibiotic use than I would be with the platelet count. Taking antibiotics like that could cause you to become resistant and eventually, they won't work at all. You can't just take an antibiotic for three days....it probably won't kill the infection and could cause an antibiotic-resistant strain.

I'd work on trying to prevent UTI's in the first place rather than having to treat them all the time. Do you actually have cultures done that are positive? I'm asking because I used to get what I thought were UTI's, but I really had Interstitial Cystitis which is not an infection, it's inflammation. Antibiotics do not work for that.

I was taking Septrin, same as Bactim, for two years as a prophylactic. It did nothing to my platelets. Funnily enough, coincidentally, it was when I stopped taking it that my count plummeted. As I say just a coincidence. But you have to do what you have to do. If taking an antibiotic long term is better than the damage caused otherwise then you have to do it.

Congrats on your 101 count!! I do not have too many problems with UTIs, however; when I did get them I also took macrobid. Now that I think about it, that might of contributed to low platelet count. Drink LOTS of water to flush it out, natural rememdies might be safer for you.
