Mammogram - experience

Question for those who have had mammograms with low platelets –

My concern is that I will come out bruised. Heck just getting my blood pressure measured leaves bruises on my arm :unsure: . My count has remained between 30K – 35K for about a year without treatment.

What has your experience been? And what where your counts like, if you know?

CindyAnn - I had a mammogram once with low counts and I didn't have any bruises. The thing is, mammograms are SO harsh that I was surprised that I didn't. I'd also think there could be a risk of bleeding inside the breast, so I'd check with your doctor on that one.

I spoke with my insurance company and they said my PCP could request an MRI instead with special cercumstance and it would be covered - if approved - fingers crossed.

If not - I am picturing not so nice looking chest for a while. (I don't have any wet bleeds but I do bruise very easy :ohmy: )

Having worked in MRI, I would never personally have a breast MRI out of choice. But that's for silly reasons, it's just so er.. not nice. But having said that I had a mammogram and found that the plate that the breast sits on caused a cut under the breast. So I wouldn't want one of them again either. But I didn't find the mammogram caused any bruising with low counts.

Not much help really am I?

I can't do a MRI, so I do the mammograms and radiation testing.

Ann I'm curious - what isn't nice about an MRI, or do you mean just a breast MRI?

Oh just the breast MRI. It's done lying on your front with the breasts hanging through a sort of cage. Uncomfortable and kind of nowhere to hide type of thing. Of course if I really needed one I'd have it but given the choice I wouldn't. In a way it's a better scan for the claustrophobic though, because of the facing down position, so swings and roundabouts I guess.

Ann, that's exactly why I can't do the MRI! Lying on my stomach makes it worse for me. For my first one, Steven had to stand at the head of the machine and hold my hand. He didn't have any feeling left in it by the time I was done!

Gotcha Ann - you're right, that does sound not nice!

MRIs don't bother me - I just close my eyes and pretend I'm in Hawaii, probably could fall asleep if they weren't so darn noisy.

I was going to ask the same question about the "breast MRI" - Thank you for asking it for me. I think in the long run I would prefer the MRI over the Traditional Mammogram - we will see if insurance will approve it as "preventitive".

Thank you all for your input - I will let you know how it goes.

I Had a mammogram with platelets between 20 and 30 and didn't bruise. It's uncomfortable but not unbearable.

Well - 2 hours on the phone with insurance and Dr. and Imaging and MRI is approved in place of Mammogram :) as preventitive - meaning paid for thanks to Obama Care (at least something good came out of that insurance fiasco) I will let all know how it goes. Thank you for your responces!
