Hi there!
I'm new here, so forgive me if this has been asked before. Have any of you guys had endometrial ablation to cut down on your periods? I just can't take birth control and I am done having kids...and wanted to get some opinions before I went to my gyno. Any info greatly appreciated :)

Best thing I ever did! I was done having children as well. I had it back in 2009 and I don't have to worry about crazy periods anymore :woohoo:

It took about 3 min and one day of rest and 3-4 days of recovery (lite duty) and all was fine.

  • I was diagnosed with ITP in March 2012. I've tried almost every treatment under the sun. Nothing really works without creating a new issue. Just taking it all one day at a time!

I'm sorry I'm commenting on such an old post/comment but I simply had to ask you a couple of questions. I was discussing, with a friend, my own observations regarding my period, the stress/anxiety involved with my personal monthly cycle and how it possibly correlates with my counts dropping like clockwork. She mentioned she had an endometrial ablation and it was also the best thing she had ever done. :D

My biggest question is - does it reduce the MENTAL effects of the cycle? ie. stress and anxiety
Another not quite as important question is, I've heard it could possibly cause some weight gain; what is your experience with that?

Any information is greatly appreciated!

The monthly stress went away with the worry of working outside the home with a VERY heavy period!!! I gained weight from the prednisone and don't really think the ablation had any effect that way. You will still have the hormonal cycle - just not the menstruation (not everyone will stop having periods, most do stop - I was fortunate and mine stopped).

Thanks for the input CindyAnn. I keep toying with this idea, but then balking at the idea of messing with the natural order of things. If I didn't have the horrors of my current heavy monthly cycle (my main ITP complaint), I could ride out lower counts so much easier. Not to mention the constant anemia struggle would improve. Decisions decisions...

I'm also thinking about doing this because it seems whenever I get really low and sick at the same time with a cold or whatever and have my period at the same time it doesn't stop I went from 12-7 over night last month made my iron go down even more but at the same time a lil scared to because it says risks are infections and since I have no spleen seems I pick up infections all the damn time and that would be my luck lol

I am brand new here and can't say how it affects platelets, but I had an ablation about 15 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did! I went from bleeding heavily for weeks and having my period control my life to it being just something that happens . I barely bleed and it lasts for only a few days. You still get PMS and all that, but the bleeding isn't bad at all! I can't recommend it enough.

as most procedures the recovery wasn't as simple as they say it is going to be, but I would still do it again in a heartbeat! So take a couple extra days off and go for it!
