High Platelets Before Surgery was created by
I was diagnosed with ITP when I was 18, I am now 35. I went through several bouts with my platelets dropping. Prednisone would work for awhile but then my platelets would bottom out. By 2000 I was forced with the decision of having my spleen removed. I agreed and had the surgery. Since having my spleen removed I have not had a single problem and my platelets run a little over 400,000. I am scheduled to have a tubal reversal next week and I went yesterday to have a CBC. I still have my platelets checked every so often because I worry. My platelet count yesterday was 481,000. Normal is 440,000. I am worried my doctor will not do the surgery now that my platelet count is above normal. Does anyone have an knowledge regarding this? I go see my TR doctor on Tuesday but that is a long time off with all this on my mind.

Diagnosed May 2005, lowest count 8K.
4/22/08: 43K (2nd Rituxan)
10/01/09: 246K, 1/8/10: 111K, 5/21/10: 233K
Latest count: 7/27/2015: 194K

Usually, doctors do not tend to worry about high counts until they get to the 700,000 to million mark. I wouldn't think it should be an issue. If you are going to be unable to move around after surgery they may give you a blood thinner, but that is common with a lot of people after surgery.

That makes me feel a little better. I did a lot of research on Google today which sometimes isn't good lol But I'm hoping it is not going to be a problem. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply!

No, your count isn't seriously high. It would be just like at the other end of the scale, if normal was 150,000 and your counts were 110,000. Not a big deal.
