Hi milly,
My question is related, and I haven't been able to get a good answer from my doctors - how does menopause and/or hrt (even the local kind) affect auto immune disease?

I've seen reports of lupus etc. getting worse with less estrogen, worse with more estrogen - my rheum shrugged and said no effect that he knows of. My sun sensitivity is way worse last few years (no hrt) but coincidence? Who knows. I'm about to try the local type of hrt,and hope my body doesn't freak out.

Hi Erica,
I have googled this til I can google no more and cannot find an answer, I have had endometriosis and in December had fibroid embolization surgery at that time my gyno said not to take HRT because it may cause the fibroids to grow again. If my platelets were to drop I would experience the massive bleeding that I had last year.
I went to my GP the other day and he suggested maybe some HRT was in order as I have been suffering badly with hot flushes, so I don't really know what to do.

I am leaning more to not taking anything because I think I have enough medication going on methotrexate, thyroxine and I also take folic acid and vitamin D. I really don't want to risk any more bleeding problems as I had 12 months of this before the fibroid embolization.

Hi Erica,

Apparently a lot of medications can cause sun sensitivity, so if you're taking other medications, they might be a cause. There was an article about it in the newspaper recently, especially talking about blood pressure medications:

I take 2 of the medications mentioned in the article and I have noticed increased sun sensitivity. I was relieved to have an explanation for it.

And Milly, I think your question about HRT and platelets is a typical ITP dilemma. Nobody seems to know enough about ITP to predict how you'll react. Even the doctors aren't much use.
