OK to use Mirena after a splenectomy? was created by ecrane11
My ITP has been under control since my splenectomy in August of 2009 and I've been taking birth control pills since 2008. I'm interested in switching to the Mirena IUD, but apparently Mirena should not be used by women with immune problems. Does anyone know if asplenia counts as a big enough immune problem? It seems like the risk comes from unsanitary insertions or infections, but if the environment is safe, is Mirena safe? Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't think the main risk is asplenia. Two things: Even after a splenectomy, you still have an autoimmune disorder (ITP antibodies) and/or the predisposition to acquire another one. Also, anyone with ITP should use BC with caution because there is an added clotting risk which goes up after splenectomy.

I'd talk to your doctor about it...both the hemo and GYN.

Thanks Sandi! My PCP gave it the go-ahead after talking to the OB/GYN in her office, but I guess I should contact the hematologist as well. Since I'm already taking birth control pills and have since before my ITP, is there a meaningful difference between those and the IUD?

I don't know. My daughter's doctor wanted her to use Mirena, so we researched it. We decided against it based on what other patients said about their experience. Do your research.
