My cycles got heavier when I hit my 40's for some reason. At that point, I was at a pre-menopause stage that lasted years. The only reason I know that is because I had the FSH and the results were 'unequivocal', meaning that I wasn't in menopause but wasn't showing a lot of hormones either.

How heavy is too heavy

Rhiannon,
I have had that heavy and it is when you have to change every half hour, can't leave the house and need blood transfusions. You will know when bleeding is too heavy and you need to do something. Been there , done that.
You also have to not just blame the ITP or menopause, always get it checked.

There is no practice run in life.

I only had the 'change every half hour' when counts were below 10. That was sure miserable!

That one monday morning - half hour.... it would have been nice if lasted that long  But thankfully it did steady up once been up and did make it to the school etc and got through but yes since then the immediate last time was just last wed morning and once up and about it was stablised per se.

But there have been various times through out this year where they have been heavy for me. So it may be as you say Sandi that hitting 40's the cycle changes etc.

I will see what happens the next monthlies and whether to take my concern to the GP and may well ask about menopausal stuff etc and get tested if there is a test? Or is it a series of test?

But thanks for both replies on that they have been helpful in knowing how to observe next monthlies B)

The rule is that if you're going through a large pad or tampon in under an hour, then you should see a doctor. I got that off of the Mayo clinic site years ago after my ITP diagnosis. I had those periods where it was difficult to get out of the bathroom. They were also pretty much continuous. But there are other things that can make your periods heavy and the chances of having these things increases with age. Both fibroids and uterine polyps can cause heavy periods and these are both common in older women. I went to my doctor because of the heavy periods and after we sorted out the ITP, she ordered some ultrasounds and I found out that I had both of these. I was 48.

So you should definitely see your doctor, Rhiannon. Also, there is a blood test that will show if your in menopause. They look at the hormone levels. I don't think you have to do anything special for it, as long as you're not taking birth control pills.
