Out of interest

does anyone else experience a swollen throat feeling before the platelets drop?

I remember one time whilst I was at University, I went to the Uni doctor about my throat. I think he thought I was after a sick note or something and I don't blame him now I understand a bit more about ITP. For 6 weeks prior to that ITP occaision I had sore throat feeling on and off. Not constant but there at times.

Once my platelets had dropped and I was on the ward I remember saying my throat felt sore to one of the nursing staff and he suddenly said, "I bet you've had it for about six weeks"? At the time I was amazed in that how come nursing staff on that ward knew about them and not general practioners. Of course these days I can answer that myself easily enough in that these doctors are only general practicing medicine and do not know about specialist conditions. Though some happen to know more than others.

But all this summer its been swollen feeling especially in the evenings. I did have a platelet drop. The sensation went away for a week or so but over the last week the throat feeling has returned. Whenever a GP has investigated there is nothing there. As far as I know am not allergic to anything. My environment has changed because I moved this time last year and have a garden which the cat is free to roam when am at home. I have tried to identify and trends.

I guess I will mention it again at my GP appointment on Wednesday. Which is going to be a bit embarrassing as my last appointment I didn't explain myself very well and I think that particular doctor wrote quite abit about anxiety? I chose a doctor this time who listened the first time I saw her. There about a dozen doctors in this practice so one can choose who they see.

So am going to do my own advice to earlier and write down all my symptoms and see how it goes...

Just wondered if anyone else has this pre symptom of ITP

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

I've never had this symptom. (If I did, I'd have a swollen throat almost all the time!)

I seem to get a sore throat all the time, but never had noticed if it's when they are low. My job is to answer phone calls all day in a call centre, so i think I just sometimes overuse my voice and not take enough breaks during the day which is very hard to do.

I usually get a hoarse, raspy voice when my platelet count gets low enough to cause easy bruising.
