benadryl and itp was created by patti
Somewhat as a heads up - today I learned that one of the rare side effects of benadryl is thrombocytopenia. It can occur either while taking it or even within the same year of having taken it. It is common for doctors to dose benadryl prior to treatments so it may be something you want to keep in mind. It may not matter for most - but it does matter for us as my son took benadryl for years for his allergies until we knew what was causing his hives. I made a homeopathic remedy today to try and undo the benadryl from his system and he already looks better (petichaie fading, etc.).

Something to tuck into the back of your mind if you take antihistamines on a regular basis. It could be complicating or even the cause of your itp.

Patti:

Most drugs list thrombocytopenia as a side effect, even common ITP treatments.

Hives on steroids are rare, because steroids are used to treat hives. Allergic reactions to Prednisone have occurred though. Go figure.

You can try Hylands Sulphur pellets for the itch. Usually 4-5 pellets every 15 minutes for a half hour will kick it.

When I had hives in 2003, (I'd had a nasty cold and sore throat) the doctor said I was either allergic to the aspirin he'd prescribed me that morning or the virus itself. Had it for a week and that was awful, so i fully sympathise with kmcadams' son! Hope he gets over it soon! I was on piriton 4 times a day and that shifted it.

Patti, what was the homeopathic remedy..was it the hylands sulphur or was this a remedy more aimed at trying to undo the damage from the benadryl? I 'm a lil confused..

The Sulphur is for the itching your son is having. It can be bought OTC. The homeopathic remedy my son took would not necessarily work for your son. Homeopathy is based on the specific person's needs. They do a really long interview basically head to toe of a person and work off of that to determine what the person needs to heal their body. It doesn't just take care of the itp, it also takes care of the reason the person got itp in the first place (imbalance in the body). So while I can tell you what my son took, it probably won't do you much good for your DS.

Did that help a little bit? I'm not the world's greatest at explaining things.

A friend of mine is very much into the homepathic medicines and Patti's doing a pretty good job explaining. While some symptoms can be rapidly resolved with over the counter items, it really does take an experienced homepathic practiioner and a very honest patient to get to the right treatment for the specific person. The other thing is that for many of us, it's taken a while to get out of balance and we may see repeat symptoms as our body recovers. Think of it like the playground see-saw or justice scales. One side goes up or down with a symptom and you've done something like take a medicine or made a lifestyle change for the symptom but may not have addressed the root cause, but you achieve a relative balance with the symptom either going away or lessening. But eventually the body comes up with a new symptom and again you treat the next symtpom. Recovery when you begin to find the root causes, may take a similar up and down swing and you may have some return of previous symptoms as you achieve balance again on the way to recovery.

Thanks Bunnie..I'm on my way and totally understand what you have just explained. I'm trying the sulphur pellets as we speak..he likes the flavor :) so at least he doesn't mind taking it! Do you have ITP or your child?
