Ode To The Big Purple Bruise On The Back Of My Leg

A Poem By Michelle

I can't help but wonder..
Why you showed up in that location.
Just as I was preparing..
For my summer vacation.

You were the first to arrive..
And the army would follow.
As the lump in my throat..
I would try hard to swallow.

The thing that you symbolize..
Your message I know.
The platelete are dropping..
Back to the Hemo I go.

Nine months since the diagnosis..
And this is really getting old.
A remission, even a short one..
Would be like fists full of gold.

But the way you showed up..
On the very back of me.
It's as if you couldn't tell me yourself..
You wanted others to see.

To have them break the news..
You're a coward, I think.
You chose for them to enlighten me..
Because you knew my heart would sink.

Or maybe, could it be..
That I have it all wrong?
Did you have my best interest..
In mind all along?

By showing up on the back..
As you already know.
I had support from a good friend..
When I learned the platelets were low.

And didn't that, in the end..
Make my experience better?
In this ITP storm..
I continue to weather.

The process has been very hard for me..
Accepting my fate.
But this type of reframing..
Has helped as of late.

So thank you purple bruise..
For where you appeared.
I won't call you friend..
But you're no longer feared.

That's a great poem. I had one of those on my arm once. I didn't notice it until my Mother said, "What's that on your arm?" My counts next day were 6.

Thanks for sharing it,

Lily

Great poem! I think that one of the hardest parts of ITP is learning to accept it - I struggle everyday to accept it. For me, your poem sends a great message of acceptance and humor. Thanks for sharing.

I wrote this poem almost two weeks ago and the bruise hasn't gone away yet.
Sheesh, pesky bruises.

That was a wonderful poem! Too true on every point. It's great you were able to make that and share it with everyone! It definitely brightened my day to read! Here's hoping that bruise has taken a hike by now. ;)
