hair loss and Biotin was created by EmilyK
It's been a while since I have been on the site. Luckily, for me, that is due to a lack of issues! I have had thinning hair for most of my adult life. Before I was diagnosed with ITP I was using a DHT blocker and minoxidil daily for about 2 years. It actually worked pretty well--I know I'll never have great hair, but at least I had hair! When I was diagnosed I was concerned that the use of the DHT blocker and the minoxidil were the reason for the ITP. Of course, once I stopped, the newly grown hair all fell out. Very sad. Fast forward a few years and I would like to start up again with the hair loss treatment, but try and be more pragmatic. I have not found any research or statements on this site about minoxidil and ITP, but I did see a few older posts about biotin (also called Vitamin H or Vitamin B7) and concerns that it might have caused lower platelets. I wondered if there were any current posters who had any experience. I did find a DHT blocker that does not have biotin. I was using Nioxin as a shampoo and then freaked out when I read the ingredients and saw that biotin was listed! I am not willing to risk my platelets for hair, but I sure would like to have more hair! Anyone have any comments for me!

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

Just searched uptodate and emc (UK meds bible for nurses) can find nothing except EMC says thrombocytopenia is an extremely rare side effect of systemic minoxidil

It can interfere with labs so I'd ask my doctor about that.

Emily, long time no see.
I get the impression from those earlier posts on Biotin that the dose was pretty high.
How about Coconut oil? I remember reading it is good for skin. Perhaps it is good for hair? Looking at a quick search result, perhaps it is - at least for some. Isn't a scalp fungal infection one of many possible causes for loss of hair? Seems like Coconut oil would help rid oneself of the infection?

Oh one other thing I meant to mention Emily.

User 'JJ' took Rituxan AFTER achieving her partial (30-80 count) remission via Nplate. It seems to have now given her a full remission - and perhaps a more stable remission.

Thanks for the post. I would not do any further treatment unless my symptoms returned. Fingers crossed that does not happen!!
