Does anyone take Melatonin to help sleep. I have read contradicting statements. One is that Melatonin shouldn’t be taken by anyone with an autoimmune disease (which I believe itp is). However, it has also been suggested melatonin increases platelets. I would welcome comments

Penny~ Yes, ITP is an autoimmune disorder. I have not heard that melatoinin increases platelets. But I have heard that we who have autoimmune disorders should not take melatonin. Here is what the Mayo Clinic says:

www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-melatonin/art-20363071

I also have Lupus and I tend to follow the advice on the Johns Hopkins rhuematology website- that is where I heard about avoiding Melatonin-

I've been reading also about melatonin increasing platelets (?!) I hadn't heard of that before. Interesting contradiction! Thanks for bringing it up- good question. Some report says that melatonin inhibits platelet aggregation- another says in increases production of platelets. kind of weird- and hard to know! hahaa

Maybe it depends on what your platelets are doing. Who knows.
