Any drug has the potential to trigger ITP. Some of the ITP treatments even list thrombocytopenia as a side effect.

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

Lipitor has the generic name of Atorvastatin. According to the UK medicines guide there is a 0.01%-0.1% chance of ITP as an adverse reaction This is corroborated by UptoDate which states a less than 1% chance.

I had been off statins for years before I was stricken with ITP. BUT statins caused me a world of problems! They are like rat poison to me. Everything from severe dental pain, sore joints, and even impotency. No doubt they could cause ITP also. I tried them all ! Elephant hide rashes, hair loss, you name it! RAT POISION!
