I am 64yrs old woman, staying at Kolkata, India. ITP is familiar with me last 22yrs. Treated with steriod(oral)primarily. In 2011, my platelet fall and I am treated with IVIG and followed by steriod oral (certain period). Again it occured on Oct 2014 and treated with the same. Suddenly on December 2014, it again fall down and rituximab was applied. Till 14 January 2016, I was ok with almost 2 lacs platelets. On the very day, my platelet was as low as 6000 and Anti D was applied. Now my platelet is 30,000. My doctor has a plan to operate spleen and before it Dr may apply Romiplostim. Please share your experience on this ground. Is splenectomy effective for 65yrs old patient?

There are studies that state that splenectomies are less effective for people over 40 years old. Romiplostim has a good success rate by itself, could you try that first and see if it works?

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

Agreed Sandi, it's got to be worth trying Romiplostim first

Romiplostim is N-Plate, which is similar to Promacta except it is a weekly injection.

As long as you keep getting the injection. Some people have gone into remission from either Promacta and N-Plate, so it's not necessarily for life.
