Something I didn't know.... was created by Sandi
I was looking up some info for a friend and came across this. I have never read this before.

Numerous studies have shown that platelet microparticles have the capacity to induce angiogenesis and are involved in the metastasis of cancer. Platelet microparticles promoted the proliferation, survival, migration, and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells, suggesting that platelet microparticles may promote the formation of new blood vessels during tumor growth. This effect was mediated by the concerted action of FGF-2, VEGF, and a lipid factor. Platelet microparticles also induced sprouting of blood vessels both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, intra-myocardial injection of platelet microparticles markedly elevated the amount of new capillaries formed in the heart muscle in the background of ischemia.

So the golden question is: Does the quantity of microparticles increase with higher platelet counts? Any thoughts?

Fascinating finding. I've come across some relatively weak research suggesting that people with certain autoimmune disorders are less susceptible to certain cancers. Now I wonder what role platelets may play in all this.

Hmmm. I've never seen less susceptible, I've always seen more susceptible due to immunosuppressive treatments or the disorder itself. I have never seen it in relation to ITP though; this is the first time.
