Questions for women who have had babies with ITP

Hi everyone,

After my second baby I was diagnosed with ITP, my husband and I are considering getting pregnant again but I have some concerns.

First, What treatments are safe during pregnancy?

Second, Will platelet counts get lower with each pregnancy?

For example, if I am at around 60 normally (not pregnant), would I be expected to be lower than that normally after pregnancy?

IVIG and Prednisone are usually used during pregnancy.

Counts can do all sorts of things...they may go up or they may go down, but there is nothing that states they will go lower with each pregnancy.

You might want to read the Pregnancy Section. It could be helpful.

Thank you. I have been doing quite a bit of reading on the pregnancy and ITP. You say that IVGI and Prednisone are usually used during pregnancy, but I have come across articles that state that they might cause harm to the baby. I'm just trying to get different perspectives on the situation.

What are your thoughts on that Sandi?

According to the mom's here, the babies have been just fine. I think they stay away from Prednisone during the first trimester, but it's okay after that. Most doctors will only treat when necessary too. They won't treat if counts are 60k, they wait until they get low enough to be a problem and worry about the counts more at the end.
