Steroid resistant ITP - splenectomy HELP!!!

Hi. First post on here. I had ITP as a child from 11 with a count of 1. Had a normal count at 19y.o.
Fell pregnant at 21 - normal platelet count no ITP. Second pregnancy at 23y.o completely normal counts up until 36 weeks where my count dropped suddenly out of nowhere to 7. Had dexamethazone, 100mg/daily prednisone, IVIG - got my count up to 97 - had a c section. Had a major hemorrhage afterwards and lots of complications.
I'm now 6 weeks post partum and my count has dropped to 20 despite being on prednisone. Hematologist has said I have steroid resistant ITP. Second lot of IVIG has worked and got my count up to 200+. But is likely to fall within 3 weeks. As I'm breastfeeding and so young (only 23) my hematologist wants to do a splenectomy rather than use drugs to treat the ITP due to the severe side effects. I have had a CT, bone marrow biopsy, and gastroscopy all of which have been returned with normal results.
Would like to hear positive splenectomy stories? Or advice as to whether I should wait and try natural options e.g paleo diet?
Thanks in advance.

Emmily:

You could try posting in the pregnancy section to see what others have done while in your situation. It seems that you have four options;

1. Have the splenectomy. Just be aware that it doesn't always work.

2. Keep using IVIG until you are done breast feeding and then try another treatment.

3. Stop breast feeding and go for another treatment option.

4. Don't treat and just monitor unless bleeding symptoms are present.

You could try the Paleo diet and see what happens, although there probably won't be a quick response if you get one at all.
