Low haemoglobin

Hi all,

Has anyone ever been told your haemoglobin level has dropped and has this had an impact on your platelet count/ any symptoms??

My count has dropped from 98 to 62 in two weeks (not something I'm hugely concerned about tbh). The nurse I spoke to then told me my haemoglobin levels had dropped dramatically in the same time frame.

He seemed to think this could be responsible for some spontaneous bruising symptoms. How are haemoglobin & itp related? If at all? It's the first time anyone has mentioned my haemoglobin to me at all

Thanks all - Kat :)

Lowest count 1. Highest count 207 (ivig) Indium scan showed predominantly splenic destruction. No meds currently, just seeing how things go.

Kat:

Low hemoglobin isn't related to ITP unless there has been internal bleeding which seems unlikely at this point. There can be other causes, usually simple fixes, but they have to figure out why first. Some women become anemic when they are pregnant. Have you been taking iron?

You may have developed anemia, if that's possible, I'm not for sure tbh. But I had the same issue. All of my counts were low including whites- I was recently diagnosed with aplastic anemia. I wouldn't worry too much at this point, but I would keep an eye on it. Try eating foods rich in iron and taking molasses and papya extract, they're known to get hemaglobin up. :)

Thanks :)

He said the last time my haemoglobin was low was when my platelet count was 13 (16 months ago). Now he's saying the haemoglobin is low because my bone marrow is working hard to produce platelets instead of haemoglobin. And that could be causing my bruising.

He being the nurse btw.

Doesn't sound like he really knows what he's talking about

Kat..I Agree it does not sound like he knows what he is talking about. I have ITP and hemolytic anemia, when my platelets go down my hemoglobin goes up. When my hemoglobin goes down my platelets go up, way up like into the 600k range. You should try to find the cause of the low hemoglobin so you can treat that. It could be you need iron or B12-

Hemoglobin and ITP are related only inso much that platlets and rbc's are created in the same place. Bone marrow biopsy might be a consideration if both decrease. Personally I always test slightly under Rbc standard.
