Increased infections with no spleen was created by monkeycrazy20
I had my spleen removed about five years ago and recently I have had an increase in sinus infections. I have previously maybe had like one or two my whole life and now i have had 4 or 5 just in the past year. I have also had bronchitis this year too. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this as well. I didn't know if it was linked to the fact that I had no spleen.

It shouldn't be because you're asplenic. Not having a spleen mostly affects you as far as certain bacteria's such as pneumonia, HIB, etc.

I don't agree. A bacterial sinusitis would likely be linked to not having a spleen. The doctor should send a swab for culture to the lab to see if it is bacterial and which antibiotic would be effective. If it is bacterial then a longer course of antibiotics to really hit it would be in order.

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

I can only speak from my own experience. My splenectomy, done in 2004, didn't put me into remission from ITP, but it hasn't resulted in any increase in infections--or any other side-effects that I can determine.
