Does anyone have these symptoms? I seem to have really bad dark circles under my eyes and my lips are constantly dry, thought maybe it could be related to ITP by any chance

I get chapped lips quite often. I just figure I'm dehydrated  I can't think of a reason to connect itp with chapped lips.

Lowest count 1. Highest count 207 (ivig) Indium scan showed predominantly splenic destruction. No meds currently, just seeing how things go.

My daughter, who had ITP as a teen, used to get what I called the "vampire look" when her counts were low. Pale with dark circles under the eyes. She also didn't sleep well during those times. I still think that is either a connection between ITP and seratonin, which I really don't understand, or just the situational depression that came with having an autoimmune disorder in the teen years. As for the lips, she didn't have that, but her eczema on her hands was worse at times when her count was low. The doc explained that eczema was also an autoimmune disorder, so it made sense that the two problems flared at the same time.

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

The bags under my eyes (constant) don't seem at all related to my platelet count. (I think, in my case, they are related to age!)

When I was diagnosed in 1989 I knew 1 other person who had ITP - our son's orthodontist. He knew when his counts dropped because he would get dark circles under his eyes.

When was your last count?

@Melinda

Last time I went was about a month and a half ago, my appointment for my next IVIg will be after tomorrow so it makes sense. I feel like my platelet count is low, and my energy levels are low too.

You said you feel like they are low? What is your platelet count? Do you schedule the IVIG in advance?

Sometimes we have to trust our feelings - I know when I came out of "remission" [counts 85-125k] the only reason I went for a count was because of a feeling I had that my count was down, no symptoms just a feeling. I never did have low energy etc with a low count.

Good luck - keep us posted.

turns out my counts were at 28, usually i get ivig when my counts are less than 20. Well I check for symptoms and i have the red dots so that's how I knew. I do schedule my ivig in advance usually my counts will go down after a month and 2 weeks. I'm going to go for the spleenectomy though, since non of the other options seem to be working for me (prednisone, rituxan)

Hi,

My wife also tells me she notices the black under my eyes,

and until I realized my mother, (who also had ITP) , also got them ,

I did not make that connection .

I also believe it must be partially due to lack of sufficient rest.

That's why it is called an IDIOPATHIC disease......

we may never know for sure.
