Hi Everyone,

My daughter is diagnosed with MYH9. Essentially she has low platelets and they are giant. Her counts are always below 10,000, but because of her diagnoses they don't do anything for her.

She was in the hospital a couple of weeks ago with cellulitis and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if she is more susceptible to cellulitis because of having low platelets?

Any one have experience with this?

Thank you!

Low platelets wouldn't contribute to cellulitis. It appears though that MYH9 can affect other organs/systems in the body, so I'm not sure if the disorder itself could be associated with cellulitis or not.

My son had cellulitis a few years ago. He got it through an open wound which was directly over an ENORMOUS bruise on his shin. The doctor at the hospital said that it wasn't linked to his ITP but said that the extent of the infection was probably worse because of the pooled blood in the area of the infection. So a tenuous connection maybe. I hope that your daughter has fully recovered now :-)

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

I've had cellulitis twice, and neither time have doctors suggested any connection between the cellulitis and my ITP.

(The last time the infection apparently entered my body through a crack between my toes. Now I always wear shower shoes in public and motel showers, and I treat preventatively for athletes foot.)
