Hello - Am new to discn.site, but not toPDSA. Diag.2009 plt 115K. Now 71K. Facing hernia repair surgry. Am senior in good fitness cond. Now trying to minimize risk of DVT/PE during and post op. No previous clotting prob EXCEPT have recollection of PCP "ordering" Venogram 1978. Do not recall going thru procedure or results - if done. Recall vertical bluish purplish streaks down front of legs betn knee and ankle and my explaining "It's from the heparin". (This during few "dark years" of my life - perhaps that accounts for vagueness of memories.) Hospital has no recs pre1986. Never placed on any anticoag regimen. Have inherited varicose veins - maybe "moderate" -Venous Duplex 2013 showed 2 sec reflux left leg. Wear 15-20 mmHg support hose. Would use of an anticoagulant like Lovenox - which my surgeon uses in abdominal surgery - be in order here? He's apparently never used it for hernias. My hemo and surgn in diffrnt practices; no communication. Hemo seems tied to ASH "Choose Wisely" guidelines; resistant to testing. (I recall Sandi's post re difficulty in getting tests ordered.)Surely someone has undergone hernia repair. . . Thank you for reading this and any comments you may make.

I think I'd leave that decision up to the surgeon. How long would you be laid up? I had neck surgery two years ago and spent one night in the hospital. I had compression stockings that night, but no anti-coagluation. I was told to stop aspirin a few days before the surgery. No problems.

My Mom on the other hand, broke her hip in January. She was on Heparin for 20 days and then they took her off of it. She developed a PE three days later and was on Coumadin for months. She had been up walking every day but apparently not often enough.

I'm sure it depends on age, platelet count and time spent immobile.
