I am a 34 yr old Asian origin very slight build man. I was diagnosed with ITP after my platelets counts plunged to 48 from 112 in just 2&1/2 months time. So, my GP put me on Prednisolone (50mg) once a day for 11 days with tapering dose. The result was good as it helped to increase my platelets levels to 102. But, my platelets counts have been continually fluctuating ever since which has been a quite scary thing for me. My haematologist thinks, I do not need any treatment now as my platelets numbers are at a quite safe level. He has also advised me and my GP that I do not need any regular platelets monitoring unless something happen to me. I am not on any medications now but I do take about 10-15 mls papaya leave extract every morning and both of my GP and haematologist are aware of it.
My main concern at the moment is how do I stabilise my immune system so that the platelets counts will be stabled? I have been very selective on what I consume every day. I have excluded all dairy products, meats and other foods that contribute to platelets destruction. But, I am quite not sure if can drink cow milk. Any advice on this matter will be highly appreciated. My GP and haematologist said I can eat any foods.
Also, I get tired easily these days. I feel very lethargic and get muscles pain very often. I feel Iike I cannot do any type of physical work which involves walking through out the shift, repeated bending, twisting, lifting and caring sick and disable people. I have also learnt that viruses’ attacks can easily flare-ups ITP. I have a health related knowledge and skills as I have done massive hours of placements as a part of my course. I had worked in this sector as a PCA and disability Support worker for some time and now I have upgraded my knowledge but I am not sure if it would be appropriate to continue to work in those positions or as a nurse.
Please kindly share your thoughts and experience on this matter. I would also love to know all the good foods you take.
Thanks

Fatigue can be a part of ITP, but I do not think that it should be assumed that ALL fatigue and other symptoms are caused by ITP. ITP patients tend to blame ITP for everything when in fact, there could be something else going on. Many patients have low Vitamin levels, thyroid problems or other autoimmune disorders and that should be checked out.

As far s diet, most people with ITP eat whatever they want. A few have had a rise in counts by eliminating certain things, but that seems to be different for everyone. Some people have a gluten sensitivity, some have problems with other foods. There is no one thing that can be avoided or eaten that will work for everyone.

Sandi is right what works for won't for another. If you are experiencing fatigue at an extreme level I would look into that especially if it is accompanied by pain. When my counts are low I get tired easy but there should be no pain with ITP. I would be looking into another cause for the fatigue and pain.

As for diet I can not help I am a true junk food junky (take out 99% of the time) When I was first diagnosed I asked my doctor did my smoking or bad eating cause ITP. His response was I have a patient who eats healthy, exercises regularly and does not smoke. They asked him how did ITP happen?

As for stabilizing your immune system not sure you may ever be able to make it perfectly stable. Our immune systems work 24 hours a day. We come in contact with many things that will trigger the immune system most we do not even no about.

I work full time as a nurse in a retirement home. I come in contact with sick people fairly often. Hand washing/ hand sanitizing often is what I recommend we can not hide from viruses. They are all around us! We also shouldn't live in fear of them either. Our bodies are designed to fight off most viruses hense the immune system working 24/7.
