Dye hair - safety with ITP? was created by Lady Elly
My doctor has told me that he doesn't believe it would be safe to use hair dye with ITP. Does anyone with ITP dye their hair?
Has your doctor told you that it is not safe?
I would appreciate any input on the subject of hair dye with ITP.
Thank you.

Did he tell you why? I'm sure the chemicals are not good for anyone, ITP or not.

However, I have always colored my hair. I did it with ITP and I do it with Lupus. I've never had a doctor tell me not to. Even if they did, I think I'd still do it. Whether or not you do is up to you.

Maybe your doctor has the wrong idea about the violence of the hair coloring process hahahaha

I am the highlight/low light queen. I don't see any change in counts. My doctor has not said anything to me about it. I think Sandi is right hair dry is full of chemicals which probably aren't great for anyone. However, I love it and refuse to give it up.

My hair is a one of a kind. To my knowledge I am the only one I know of that when they colour their hair it doubles the speed at which it grows.

Like Sandi said maybe the doctor is concerned about the chemicals.

For me I colour when I want and how I want. Have not noticed if it has an effect on my count or not. The only person who prevents me from colouring is my boss. She doesn't feel pink is appropriate for a manager!

PS: I do not colour to cover grey I colour for fun. Covering my Grey is just a benefit!

Thank you for all the response which is so informative. I have not dyed my hair since coming down with ITP which has been 4 years.
It may be the chemical odor and chemical going into the scalp that the hematologist was concerned about. Not sure, as he did not give me a reason.
Your input was great! Thanks!

Hi Sandi,

My hematologist did NOT tell me why I should not dye my hair. My next appointment is not until May, so I plan to ask him why he doesn't feel it is safe.

Thanks for your reply

Hi Sandi,

That's a cute one! ha ha

He is young and so positive. No matter how scared I was when I first came down with I.T.P., he made me feel that things would be o.k. So far, everything is fine, except platelets stay low.

Love your comment!
