Mild ITP - Question re: use of anti inflammatories

I was diagnosed with ITP about 4 years ago.

Initially my platelet count was in the low 20's but over time and after some initial treatment with Prednisone… it has slowly, year after year crept up to the low 100's - and I'm very happy about my gradual platelet increase.

My question is related to the use of anti inflammatories. For the last 4 years I have avoided them completely… preferring to use Acetaminophen. But there are times when I wish I could take an anti inflammatory as opposed to a pain reliever.

With a platelet count in the low 100's is it safe to use anti inflammatories for temporary usage?

Usually, yes. Anti-inflammatories don't lower platelets, but they can affect platelet function and cause them to be less sticky. That should not be a problem with counts in the 100's.

However, any drug can cause thrombocytopenia, so there is always a chance you could be sensitive to anti-inflammatories. The same could happen with antibiotics or any other medication.

That's interesting , I never knew there was a problem with using anti inflammatorys but it makes sense because when I was at the docs(again) they said I'd costochondirits but couldn't give me anti inflammatorys but I never questioned til they said the pain would just go away.

I was diagnosed with costochondirits years ago very painful. They told me to be careful because I at risk for getting again that sometimes the damage reoccurs. Unlike you they offered me other options but I refused because of ITP. I was offered toradol which I had been given for something else and noticed a drop in my numbers. Since than it has acted up twice. Been lucky after that no further occurances.
