I still get petechia but one or two especially when I'm upset or stressed yet my platelets are 213 last count. I've been taking florinef to help with bp cos apparently it drops when I stand at times. Found this out through a private doctor, I'm still not sure it helps. Got a blood test recently and esr was 20 which was over slightly. It's meant to be 15. My crp is 0.9 which is normal but is there a correlation between crp and esr. Also fatigued still with dizziness. I felt better going gluten free. The minute I go back to my yummy cakes my stomach acts up. Do people with itp usually have higher esr? I know it's not particularly high but still not in normal range. I hd Ana too and it's not too high either.

esr is sed rate - that looks for inflammation

www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/sed-rate/basics/definition/prc-20013502
Sed rate, or erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), is a blood test that can reveal inflammatory activity in your body. A sed rate test isn't a stand-alone diagnostic tool, but it may help your doctor diagnose or monitor the progress of an inflammatory disease.

www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/sed-rate/basics/results/prc-20013502
The normal range is 0-22 mm/hr for men and 0-29 mm/hr for women. The upper threshold for a normal sed rate value may vary somewhat from one medical practice to another.

Ash:

Melinda is right, the ESR or "Sed Rate" measures inflammation. 20 is a perfectly good result. Nothing to worry about at all.

I get my SED tested all the time and it's usually around 60. 20 is still normal on my copy of the reference range.

Both of those tests measure inflammation, but in different ways.

Thanks for that. When I asked my doctor told me that esr is 0-13 for women, I guess it's different in different countries. When I got the print out it said it was abnormal. I don't know it's different I guess in different countries. It's the same for thyroid I got tested one time and I was 4.2 and in America above 3 was borderline hypothyroid and in Ireland the higher limit was 4. So to them I was just past the limit. It's annoying cos I've been fatigued and I don't know whether it's a part of me being down and i just don't know. Really it's hard to know.

The ESR is usually associated with systemic inflammation, such as swollen joints or muscle pain (myalgia). Theoretically, the higher it is, the more inflammation and pain a person would have. 20 is still really good. 'Normal' goes up as a person gets older. I've known of people over 100.

Reference ranges don't only differ in different countries, they can differ from lab to lab in the same country. Here in the U.S., we can see different ranges just by having blood work done someplace new. The reference range for thyroid was at 5 for hypo and it was changed to 3, but some labs here have not caught up. Same with B-12 and I'm sure there are other things.

I don't think the ESR would reflect fatigue. Have you had any vitamin levels checked?

I don't know much about the ESR, but I have gotten a couple of petechiae while my count has been above 200 as well. It's so strange.

Diagnosed: August 2013, lowest count 2k.
Treatments: IVIG, Prednisone, transfusions.
Current Count: 233k, 12/23/2013.
Currently: Watching/waiting.

People can get petechiae for a few reasons, one being from scratches or cutting off circulation. Say you wrap a plastic bag handle around your hand and carry it like that. You can get a few petechiae. Sometimes sitting cross-legged can give you some on your legs. You might do something like that during the day and not even realize it. I've gotten them on my hand from sleeping on it at night. My husband has had them from forcefully coughing.

I'd never worry about or question a few petechiae. It's when they cluster and spread that you need to look more closely.

I think with petichae, I never really was aware of them until the day I was diagnosed. I had them all over and they were large and in clusters. Like what Sandi said. Now I see other peoples skin and they have tiny ones. My boyfriend has a few on his collar, wear his shirt hangs. My dad gets a few on his arms. I usually have them wear my seatbelt is. I think it's something we all have, but look for the signs sandi talked about.

Exactly. Same with bruises. Before ITP, we'd all just think "oh, I must have bumped myself" and go on with our day. Since ITP, bruises cause more panic. We tend to forget that we bruised prior to ITP and that bruises can be okay at times.

Yes I got my vitamins checked once. Very low vit d but then it went back up after taking a bit of vit d. I stopped taking them so might take a few again. Ireland has no sunshine so that could be a reason. Ya petechia funnily enough come when I get stressed. They literally appear. It's always just like one or two, then they go.
