Splenectomy Question

Splenectomy Question was created by Luvmycat
My husband and I are talking about a splenectomy for him--just talking. I thought I had read somewhere that if a person has a splenectomy, then none of the other treatments for ITP can be administered such as steroids, IV treatments, etc. Is this so? It is really like buying a lottery ticket. It's a big gamble imo.

No, that isn't true. Steroids, Ivig, rituxan, promacta, nplate are all used successfully for people who have had a splenectomy. The only treatment that I know of that can't be used is winro .

Oh goodness, no! As Dru said, all treatments can be used after splenectomy except Win-Rho.

Things to be aware of:

After splenectomy, treatments such as Prednisone, Decadron, Rituxan, Imuran, CellCept, etc. can raise the risk of immunosuppression.

After splenectomy, treatments such as Promacta and N-Plate can raise the risk of blood clots.

In Ontario Canada you can't have Winrho/ Rhogam if you have had your spleen removed.

The only concern after having a spleen out would be treatments that suppress the immune system. You would need to be extra careful and watchful!

Also the TPOs, Promacta and Nplate, work less well in the spleenless so you need higher doses. And higher doses of the TPOs means more risk of clotting. Lots to consider I think.
