Curious as to whether anyone has had NPLATE injections for a year or more and had a bone marrow biopsy as is recommended to check the marrow for any damage from the NPLATE. If so, was there any damage ?

That's interesting. Who recommends a bone marrow biopsy? In the guidelines I read it said to look at the blood smear and if there were any morphological changes then do a bone marrow biopsy. I wonder if they've updated the guidelines.

I've used Nplate for several years and nobody has suggested a biopsy to me.

interesting indeed. I either read this or viewed it somewhere. I think the reason is to see if the NPLATE is causing riticulin (sp) in the marrow which in turn could lead to other problems.

They did one last year to see if indeed I had ITP and of course I did. I asked my hemoc about it last I saw him and he did not say it was not necessary. So, either he thinks it is a good idea, or he is doing it to appease me, or it's a money making thing and he needs some Christmas money.

Bill:

Bone marrow biopsies are not necessary to diagnose ITP and really do not confirm ITP in any way. That is old school thinking. Things have changed.

I was also under the impression that BMB's are not necessary during N-Plate injections unless there are changes in blood work that seem suspicious.

I have been on NPLATE for almost two years and had a BMB after the first year and had another one last Tuesday (my second year). My hema says this is procedure now. I don't know I just accepted it. Interesting to see peoples thoughts on this one as I had never thought to question it.

It's not suggested in the manufacturer's guidelines for the UK so I'm happy not to have one and I'm certainly not going to suggest it! LOL.

I wish I was just being diagnosed with ITP because I really hated the BMB/A. To think now a days they don't do it or need to do it!

I had mine done at the Mayo Clinic and it was a breeze - conscious sedation, in and out in 20 minutes.
