My doctor is having an episode

Went in for a check up today. My doctor had an ITP episode as a teenager, became a hematologist as a result of it. It was 17 years before he caught a virus from his son and had another attack. It has been four years since then. This morning when he came in, he looked bummed. Soon found out when he showed me his hand and there were petriarcha(whatever) on it. He said over the past few days his platelets have been falling. I felt really bad for him. It's sort of like one plague sufferer showing another one the bubos. Geesh. Makes you realize you really have zero control over this other than not tossing back a gigger of quinine.

Aww poor doctor! As I have said before I think it's awesome that he took his own personal experiences and is using them to help others! I hope his counts rise ASAP!

It is really nice that he knows what you are experiencing, that he knows about the side effects of at least steroids personally, etc.

Do you know what your doctor is treating himself with? Did he have a spelenctomy? It would be interesting to see what a doctor actually uses himself.

I see you have fallen into the quinine trap. Quinine can cause a drug induced ITP but it's rare and is not related to ordinary ITP that we all have. My drink of choice is gin and tonic so I made it my business to research it! :)

I wanted to ask him. My husband did, too, but my husband said he thought it would have been a massive invasion of privacy. I am his patient, but he is not mine. I know he was not hospitalized last time and he's still working. I asked him if there was ever a time when he did not give a patient steroids. He said, "Not if they're at zero." I don't think he had a splenectomy. He was a teenager when he first got it and he went into a 17 year remission, so his ITP must not have been balky.
