Question looking for theories ideas? was created by Winnifred
So it seems the last few blood tests my daughter has had revealed that her platelets are slightly low. They are above 100 and just outside the normal range.

Now I know as a mother I'm not supposed to worry, but I have been lately. We are so much alike it is almost scarey. We look a like only difference is she's tall and i'm short. Medically we have many similarities.

Mom - Born with asthma, bad allergies as a child, IBS-C, Joints that easily go out of place, and ITP

Daughter - Born with asthma, bad allergies as a child, IBS-D, Joints that flex in wrong directions, now finding lower platelet counts.

Part of me thinks just ignore it could be a fluke but the other part of me is like we are too a like to ignore this. We don't really know when my counts started going low we just know when they hit the single digits.

Lately she has been talking about moving back closer to home and this got me thinking. Since she was a patient of my family doctor should I try and get her back in as a patient? Talk him into monitoring her with a few CBC's?

Her counts bounce up and down in and out of the normal range but each time they go down it is a little lower than the last time. Now were talking over a long period of time (1-2 years). None of the counts have even been a concern in fact most of the doctors said they wouldn't have mentioned it. And it is only after telling them about me that they give her the numbers.

I am interested in your thoughts and or opinions on this. Suggestions you name it.

Julia:

My thought is, if it's not a problem, why look at it as if it were one? If her counts go down, you can deal with it then. You'd find out one way one another. Since most do not treat until 20k or below, what's the point of checking it all the time? Granted, it won't hurt anything, but leaving things as they are isn't hurting anything either.

I have a history of ITP but am only monitored by my hemo once a year. I do get CBC's through my Rheumatologist every 3 months, but that is only because of the immunosuppressants. I'd be fine with a CBC once a year otherwise.

I know health issues are a major cause of worry for us Mom's, but you and your daughter will both know if something is wrong. You're an ITP pro now!

Thanks Sandi

That is what my head was telling me to do. I find it very hard to stand back and let my kids be adults and live their lives. Every time they ask for my opinion it takes all I have to say. It is your choice it is what makes you happy.

When we last spoke the mommy in me go so scared for her. I will stand back and let life unfold the way it is meant to be.

Oh believe me, I get it. My daughter Holli has Graves and it is hard for me to sit back and watch her make her own decisions. But then I remind myself that I taught her to be an assertive, informed patient and she really is. That was the best thing I could have done for her, and over time I slowly backed off and let her handle things. That is what we want as parents....a responsible adult. She still asks for advice once in a while and of course I'm here for that, but once she makes a decision, I support her even if I don't always agree. She knows the pros and cons and it's her life.
