Can I use Naproxin occasionally? was created by TerryOnTheMend
Does anyone know if it is ok to use naproxin occasionally when you have ITP. I've been testing in the normal range for about a year. I have foot pain from time to time, and if I don't get on top of it right away, it can cripple me up for weeks. I take the smallest dose I can; one, maybe two over the counter tabs a day for two or three days. Nothing else works for me, including Tylenol, which one Dr keeps trying to convince me to take instead. I'm frustrated because one doctor says it's ok, and the other doesn't. Is there anyone else out there that has struggled with this? I don't want my ITP to come back, but I don't want to live in pain either!

NSAID's like Naproxen are not good if counts are low because they thin the blood. If counts are normal, taking a few occasionally shouldn't cause a problem. Any drug can cause thrombocytopenia though, so there is a risk with anything, including Tylenol.

I've been taking 1,000 mg's of Naproxen daily for about 7 years with no adverse affect on platelets.

My hems told me it is fine to take naproxen if counts are stable and at least 100k. I have taken it many times for shoulder pain.
