Three Years And It's Back

It's been three years since I worried about ITP. After watching my platelets drop for months, I was so scared. My doctor didn't prescribe prednisone until I was at 17k. But after that, counts went up and seemed to stay up. My counts were usually on the low side of normal, 130-150k but nothing to worry about.

Now, what seems like out of nowhere. I found out my counts were 69k last week and 59k this week. I went to see an allergist a couple of weeks ago. I casually mentioned the ITP. I wasn't actually concerned about it but since I've never seen her before I felt I should mention it. I actually almost forgot to mention it. She wanted to see my current count just to be on the safe side and voila. Here I am .. again.

There's only one hematologist I can see in the area. Apparently he isn't taking new patients. But my case was forwarded to him as "high priority" and so hopefully I won't have to find an out of town doctor.

You know, I'm not even worried. I've been here before. I now know that even at 17k, I was fine. Sure... bruising like hell, but the medicine seemed to make me all better so it is what it is. I guess I'm just surprised more than anything.

I'm not sure if there is any link, but this has come at a time where my allergies flared up and I had some sort of bacterial infection.. maybe strep or something. Does anyone know if these kinds of things are linked?

I think anything that stirs up the immune system can trigger a recurrence. You never know. It's also possible that your counts were down for quite a while and you just never knew. It's happened to me. I spent three years in normal range and hadn't had any CBC's. Then I got one and found out I was at 30k. Have no idea how long I was there, but didn't matter because I wouldn't have done anything anyway.

Good luck with your new doctor and keep us posted!

Lorna, when you say "the medicine seemed to make me all better," do you mean medicine for allergies fixed the allergies?

I'm sorry, I meant the prednisone that I was given to treat ITP last time.
