bruising from sardines? was created by freckles
i eat about a can of sardines a day because i figured they're good for you and i like them. i do go a fews days without them until i go shopping. i seem to notice some easy bruising after maybe 4 or 5 days in a row.
i know too much omega 3 supplements can make you bruise more, but i didnt think the whole food could do it.
anyone else experience this. i'll probably cut down a little anyway.

Hey there Freckles!

I would imagine that food could cause it too if you eat enough of it.

This weeks "Nature" has two articles that presents data supporting high salt intake exacerbates auto-immunity problems.

I, for one, am one of those people who has added salt to my salt all my life....

There is a summary/editorial article that I'll attempt to upload here -

It's asking me to pay for a subscription. I can't get to the article.

Here's a synopsis from the article you are referring to:

Very interesting. Here's another news release from Harvard talking about this work. (Hope it goes through.) It talks more about the technology they used to do this work, which sounds pretty advanced.

Freckles, I wonder if that's why my boy stopped eating sardines? He just decided one day he didn't like them anymore after eating them for years so he could blow fish breath on his sisters. I wonder if his body was telling him "no more" because of the low platelets??? Interesting.

As to the salt article, I don't buy it. Largely because the tests they ran were very likely done on refined white salt and it isn't good for the body in the first place. But celtic sea salts are good for the body. So this is not a bandwagon I'm quick to jump on given all I know about celtic sea salt and the body's need for it. I have a boy that eats salt like crazy and we never knew why. When he got ITP and they started running CMP's with his CBC's his sodium was horribly low. His body was telling him he needed the salt. And as his sodium went up, his salt use went down. We only use sea salt and it does make a difference in his overall general well being (low sodium, not as much energy, struggling adrenal and thyroid glands). Rather then reduce salt usage, it makes more sense health wise to switch to a celtic sea salt that hasn't been bleached and the minerals removed from it. The other variable in their study is that refined salt is known to leach minerals from the body (calcium and potassium). That being the case, how do they know as they increased the level of salt that the autoimmunity wasn't increased by a lack of minerals? Yep, too many variables with this one.
