looking to taper off prednisone.. was created by kwright
My mom is 60 and diagnosed with itp in 2008

Splenectomy didn't work. She has had two IVIG TREATMENTS when her count dropped to 1,She is currently on 4mg prednisone. She tried to taper to 3mg last week and her count dropped dramatically to 50k from 160k, similar to her past relapses. She has stepped it up to 6mg this morning. I am afraid that this is not going to help her and she is heading to 1 and another ER ROOM visit. She does not have insurance. should she step up her medication to 10mg. please help.

Her long term goal is to stop prednisone given the long term effects and is looking for alternate TREATMENTS.

It would be really unusual for a count to drop so much from just a 1 mg. taper. 1 mg. is a teeny amount of Prednisone and most would have no response at all, either up or down, from that much Prednisone.

4 mg's is also a pretty low dose. You're right, it's not good to be on any steroid long-term, but that low of a dose may not do much damage. The human body produces about 7.5 mg's of cortisol daily, so any amount of Prednisone below that isn't a lot.

As for her counts, I think I'd ask her doctor what to do instead of just raising the dose on your own, especially if she's trying to get off of it.
