Go to MD with flu? was created by karatemom3
Do those of you on immuno-suppressants go see your doctor when you get sick? My adult son with Evan's Syndrome has had cold symptoms for two days and now flu symptoms for two day: fever 102, chill ,cough, sleeping and not eating. He says it's just the flu and can ride it out. He lives 2 hours away. He has been on Prednisone for a while but just started Cellcept in Sept. His wife called his hematologist but they have not called back. I think he should go to the ER for labs and maybe a chest x-ray. Am I over reacting?

It's hard to say. I rarely go to the ER when I'm sick, and I'm on Prednisone and Methotrexate. However, I did go about six weeks ago when I woke up with a temp of 103. I felt really sick, (horrible chills and body aches) and never get fevers that high. Turns out I had pneumonia, so it was a good thing I went.

My fear is always sepsis and anyone who is immunosuppressed should be careful. What dose of CellCept is he on?

He should definitely see his MD. As Andy wrote, people on immunosuppressant should be very careful with fever and chills and not take chances.

My son did end up going to the ER last night. He was dehydrated and has pneumonia. He had been vomiting too and didn't tell his wife. His hemoglobin dropped to 6.7 this AM. Platelets are staying between 80 and 100. So he is getting IV antibiotics, IV fluids and blood transfusion. He felt bad to begin with after vomiting this AM and then they gave him potassium, prednisone 40 and Cellcept. Zofran didn't help and I had to tell the nurse to please get an order for Pepcid or something. He is finally feeling a little better tonight. I suggested he might want to skip the cellcept tonight and talk to his regular hematologist tomorrow. He started on one gram and his Hgb started dropping slowly and he didn't feel too hot. It was increased to 2 grams and it's dropping fast and feels awful. I found out that an ALPS doctor at the NIH suggested the cellcept to get him off prednisone and then he may test positive for ALPS. As I mentioned in a previous post, to be diagnosed with ALPS his DNT has to be 1 or greater. It was 0.9 but they have had false negative results in people on prednisone. So he has to suffer for 0.1 ?
