Itp and working out

  • I'm 31 years old and a mom to two awesome little boys, I was diagnosed with itp when I was 17 years old. With no treatment my counts are 0-5 I am currently on nplate and I had a splenectomy in 2004

Ok questions a little late since ice had itp for nine years u do work out anyway my ice been told to stick to stationary exercises but did a class the other night I absolutely loved does anyone else full on work out if their platelets are low?

The risk of working out at very low counts is strain, like lifting weights, could cause internal bleed, or injury, like dropping a medicine ball on your foot, could cause a serious injury.

Diagnosed May 2005, lowest count 8K.
4/22/08: 43K (2nd Rituxan)
10/01/09: 246K, 1/8/10: 111K, 5/21/10: 233K
Latest count: 7/27/2015: 194K

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

I exercise at least 5 days a week no matter what my platelet count is. Unless you're doing something dangerous (playing contact sports, for example), I can't see why you shouldn't work out. Some people do complain that they feel fatigued with low platelets, but if fatigue isn't a problem, exercise away!

I work out seven days a week, most weeks. I was pretty consistent in doing this even when my platelets were super low. The only time I stopped was when I would have "crash" days after taking a Dexamethasone pulse, and on those days, I would sleep pretty much 24 hours straight.

My typical work outs consist of an elliptical and free weights. However, when the weather is nice, I'll walk or jog outside as well. I do a pretty high intensity work out, but at the same time, I think the biggest risk (for a person with ITP) would be that I would fall.

I'm not sure what sort of class you are taking, but if you enjoy it and it makes you feel good, I think there is a lot to be said for being happy and the endorphins that come from working out.

Working out helps your immune system, I do P90x, high cadrdio classes and yoga. My platelets are in the 70's now. :)

I belly dance, Zumba, and do beachbody workouts. I still have my PORT in and have had no problems. Hopes this helps :P
