ITP vs. TTP was created by hayley311
Anyone been diagnosed with TTP? I was diagnosed with ITP in December but am now having blood clots. First PVT 3 weeks post splenectomy then DVT 7 1/2 weeks after that while still on Coumadin. Curious if I could have TTP as opposed to ITP. I was wondering if anyone on here had TTP and could share info into it. Thanks!

Hayley - I have rarely seen anyone here with TTP. We usually direct them elsewhere as TTP is NOT treated the same and we cannot give any advice. Sorry to hear about the clotting....that can be scary!

There are several reasons for clotting following splenectomy. First of all, splenectomy can make a person more prone to clots. Second, some people with ITP also have APS (which can be detected with a blood test). Third, there are several other clotting disorders that can cause clots, such as Factor V Leiden Thrombophilia. When counts go up, so does the risk of clotting if one of those disorders is present.

Have your doctors looked for a reason for the thrombosis? You really need a proper diagnosis. What are your counts?

I would have to double check if those tests have been ran, I don't remember being told about them/results of them so I'm guessing no. My platelets were 93k this past Friday and today I've noticed petchiae again.

I understand as far as treatments TTP is handled differently than ITP but why are they directed elsewhere? Is it because TTP is technically a blood disorder, even though it causes low platelets?
thanks!

We can't help people with TTP because we have no experience with it. It can be much more involved than ITP and is more life-threatening than ITP.

If I were you, I'd start asking questions so you know what you are dealing with.
